You hear of stories of clubs moving into new homes that struggle to adapt, but Freiburg's time in the Europa-Park Stadion has been the most consistently successful in the history of this Football Club. They moved into this Stadium in 2021 and Freiburg have enjoyed four top seven finishes in five years in the German Bundesliga.

During that time, Freiburg have finished Runners Up in the German Cup and that was the outcome of the Europa League run in May when they were beaten 3-0 by Aston Villa. This all means a major trophy is still missing, but Freiburg will enter the Conference League as one of the favourites if they can complete this Play Off tie win over Motherwell after winning the First Leg 3-1 in Scotland last week.

Freiburg have won both games played in all competitions in the 2026/27 season, but they are going to be playing at home for the first time. The side are unbeaten in 5 at home in all competitions since losing a Bundesliga fixture against mighty Bayern Munich and Freiburg have won 4 of those matches played. Motherwell

As soon as the draw for the Conference League Play Off Round was made, Motherwell fans would have been aware of the size of the task in front of them if they were going to reach the Group Stage of the competition. They achieved the first part of making sure they progressed past HJK Helsinki in the Third Qualifying Round, but Motherwell have it all to do if they are going to earn a spot in the League Phase.

Respect has to be given to Motherwell for the efforts in the First Leg of this Play Off Round tie, but they failed to build on a very early goal and the game got away from them when reduced to ten men in the second half. Conceding in the 96th minute will have really hurt and chasing a two goal deficit away from home is a big ask of a club that has won 1 of the last 11 away European ties played.

Motherwell will have no excuses about fitness having had a Scottish Premiership game postponed this weekend, but they have been beaten in the Scottish League Cup Second Round at Stenhousemuir prior to the defeat to Freiburg in the Play Off Round First Leg. The side had won 3 away games in a row in all competitions before the draw in Helsinki followed by that upset in the Scottish League Cup, but Motherwell fans will know they have not faced someone like Freiburg in that run.

Martin Moormann was sent off in the First Leg and will serve a suspension.

Head to Head

This is the first competitive fixture involving these clubs that is to be hosted by Freiburg.

Prediction

The injury time goal scored last week puts Freiburg in a commanding position in this Play Off Round tie and they should be able to secure another relatively comfortable win when hosting on Thursday.

There will be one eye on the start of the Bundesliga this coming weekend, but Freiburg can build on the early season momentum and should have far too much for Motherwell.

Last season Freiburg won all 7 home games in the Europa League and they should be able to exert enough attacking pressure to break down this Scottish Premiership again.

Motherwell will take some encouragement from the way the fixture was being played out before Martin Moormann was sent off in giving away a Penalty in the second half, but that was also a fixture played at Fir Park.

It is a completely different test of character away from home and Freiburg may end up picking off a tiring Motherwell side in the second half just as they did in the First Leg.
