Chelsea
Xabi Alonso has openly admitted his excitement about the front three that Chelsea have put together, but the fans would have been concerned by the continuing goalkeeping issue, which puts unnecessary pressure on a young defence. The board clearly understand and Chelsea have agreed a deal with Aston Villa to sign World Cup winning goalkeeper Emi Martinez and the next nine months could be very exciting.
That deal has not been confirmed by the club with the Argentine set to undergo a medical, while the last couple of days of this summer transfer window may continue to be busy as Enzo Fernandez is still linked with a move to Manchester City. All Chelsea can do is focus on what they can control and Xabi Alonso will be very pleased with the work his players have gotten through over the first week of the new season.
Chelsea did not have a very good end to last season as they were being managed by a caretaker after going through two permanent managers in 2025/26. The appointment of Xabi Alonso brings in someone with a solid managerial CV and knowledge of the Premier League and The Blues have beaten Fulham and Luton Town over the last few days. Chelsea had not won any of 6 Premier League games at Stamford Bridge and had lost 4 in a row here before beating Tottenham Hotspur in the last League game played at home last season.
Wesley Fofana is available, while Moises Caicedo is hoping to be available to face his former club. Both Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra are expected to miss out, while the manager did utilise the squad to get through the League Cup Second Round tie against Luton Town on Thursday.
Brighton
A comfortable home win over Tromso has carried Brighton into the Conference League Group Stage and the six matches to be played between October and December were drawn out on Friday. There will be much excitement within the fanbase to return to European competition, as there will be in the boardroom, while Fabian Hurzeler will be hoping the achievements of last season can propel Brighton for better over the next few months.
The Seagulls will be one of the favourites to win the Conference League, which has been dominated by English Premier League clubs since this third UEFA competition was first played. They will be looking to round out a very positive opening to the new season with a big result at Stamford Bridge, and Brighton will certainly be looking to improve the 5-5-9 away record produced last season.
Brighton may have missed out on the Europa League when losing 3 of the last 4 Premier League games played at the end of last season, but they have begun this campaign with a goalless draw at Tromso before back to back 4-0 home wins over the same opponent and Aston Villa. Fabian Hurzeler's team did lose the last 2 away Premier League games at the back end of the last campaign as they prepare to head out in this Division for the first time in 2026/27.
Kaoru Mitoma and Georginho Rutter are hoping to pass fitness tests to be involved this weekend. The leading goalscorer after the opening weekend of the Premier League is Jack Hinshelwood, but he has suffered an injury in training and it is feared that will keep him out until after the September international break. Yankuba Minteh has been linked with a move to Liverpool, but is another set to miss 'several weeks'.
Head to Head
Brighton scored three goals in both Premier League games against Chelsea last season and picked up maximum points.
Chelsea had won 3 in a row at home against Brighton before that defeat in September 2025.
Prediction
These two clubs have done plenty of transfer business together and so a number of players will be facing a former club, although the direction of travel is largely players moving from the Amex Stadium to Stamford Bridge.
Both Chelsea and Brighton could not have asked for a better start to the Premier League season- the former scored three in winning the first West London derby of the campaign, while Brighton scored four at home against Aston Villa and all before half time. The two have both made progress in different Cup competitions on Thursday as well and so confidence is not really going to be something that the players will have difficulty finding.
A first home game of the season will give Chelsea the edge, but they will know how difficult Brighton tend to make things for them.
The Seagulls won both Premier League meetings last season, but the injury to Jack Hinshelwood is a blow after the young player scored twice last weekend in the win over Aston Villa.
Despite that, Brighton will play with attacking intent and they should cause problems for a Chelsea team that are still hoping to confirm the arrival of Emi Martinez from Aston Villa. He may yet sign in time to be registered for this match, but it looks increasingly likely that Robert Sanchez will begin and this former Brighton player has made his defenders nervy.
At the same time, Xabi Alonso has to be really confident that Chelsea can create plenty of threat with Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro all contributing in the 2-3 win at Craven Cottage on Monday. These three look capable of scoring plenty of goals for Chelsea and that gives them a chance to put a very strong campaign together.
Goals look likely on Sunday afternoon and the last 8 Premier League games between Chelsea and Brighton have all finished with at least three shared out. The visiting team might be without a couple of key attacking players, but Brighton have a 'next man up' mentality that has continued to serve them well.
No one will be getting excited about the price, but this is the very early stage of the Premier League season and things may not settle fully until the transfer window closes on Tuesday.
Chelsea and Brighton have looked very capable in the final third and it may just be best to back this high-scoring fixture of recent meetings to continue on that trend.
