It is too late for the Kansas City Royals (61-75) when it comes to making this season the kind of success they would have hoped before the 2026 campaign begun, but they are in very strong form right now. That means they can be an irritant to those chasing Playoff spots and American League Central rivals Cleveland Guardians (68-67) will be looking to find a way to cool the Royals down.

This proved to be the case when the Royals took the opener on Friday and that means the Cleveland Guardians are now 3.5 games behind the Chicago White Sox in the Division. A seven game winning run before the defeat in the opener has pushed Cleveland 2 games clear in the Wild Card race, but they will be looking to bounce back against a Kansas City team that deserves plenty of respect.

Cleveland will be giving the ball to Foster Griffin who has bounced back from a tough debut following his trade from the Washington Nationals. A 15-4 record and 3.19 ERA in twenty-six starts on his return to the Major League has earned Foster Griffin plenty of credit this season and he is now a much more experienced player thanks to playing in Japan for a number of years.

Foster Griffin gave up five runs in 4 Innings in his first start in a Cleveland uniform, but he has bounced back to go 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his next three starts. Earlier this season, Foster Griffin completed 6 Innings and held the Royals to a single run, although he did not factor into the decision.

The ball will be given to Daniel Lynch IV for the Kansas City Royals and the pitcher has a 4-4 record and 2.93 ERA in fifty appearances this season. This will be the fifth time Daniel Lynch IV will be asked to start, but he is effectively going in as an opener and the Royals will go through a number of relievers in this contest.

All four previous starts in 2026 have been made this month and Daniel Lynch IV has a 0-2 record and 6.57 ERA in those. The first two starts saw him withdrawn without completing 3 Innings and the decision loss was handed to Lynch IV both times, but he has allowed three earned runs in a little over 8 Innings thrown across the last couple of starts.

Daniel Lynch IV has thrown a little over 3 Innings out of the bullpen against the Cleveland Guardians this season and he has yet to allow a run to this American League Central rival.

Prediction

The Cleveland Guardians have to believe they have the edge on the starting mound, although you cannot dismiss a team in the kind of form that the Kansas City Royals have been producing.

It was more of the same on Friday, but Daniel Lynch IV may not be able to go as long as Foster Griffin and the latter is pitching really well for the Guardians.

This may just give the home team enough of an edge to sneak to a victory and they can be backed to do that.
