There is no longer time to be patient and excuses are not going to cut it with the fanbase as teams make the last push towards the post-season. The Baltimore Orioles (70-75) took the opener of this three game set with the Cleveland Guardians (73-72) and that leaves the Orioles 3 games out of the top three positions in the American League Wild Card.

Making this series even more important for Baltimore is the fact that the Cleveland Guardians are occupying that third Wild Card spot and it almost feels the home team need a sweep to have real hopes of earning a Playoff spot. That does build pressure, although the Guardians are going to be feeling plenty of that too with a 3 game gap between them and American League Central leaders Chicago White Sox.

While there will be a real hope they can overturn the White Sox, Cleveland are also managing the Wild Card race and they are just a game ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays so this is the time of the season when players are looking to play important roles.

The Guardians will hand the ball to Tanner Bibee who has a 5-15 record and a 4.06 ERA in twenty-nine starts for Cleveland this season. He has become an important part of the rotation ever since joining the Major League in 2023 and there is a pressure on Bibee to provide at least four more strong starts to put his team in a position to return to the post-season.

Tanner Bibee is looking to bounce back from being knocked around for five runs in 4 Innings thrown in his opening start of September. He took the decision loss against the Toronto Blue Jays and means Bibee is 1-4 with a 5.08 ERA from his last five starts.

The pitcher will take confidence from the fact he threw 6 Innings against the Baltimore Orioles earlier this season and kept them off the scoreboard. However, in the previous two starts against the Orioles, Tanner Bibee had allowed nine runs in a little shy of 13 Innings thrown with both of those taking place in 2025.

On the other side, Baltimore will give the ball to Brandon Young who has a 9-3 record and 3.42 ERA in the twenty-four starts made in his sophomore season in the Major League. This is a complete contrast to the struggles of the rookie season and Brandon Young has continued to get through the Innings and offer Baltimore a chance to be successful.

In the first start in September, Brandon Young was one Out away from completing 7 Innings against the Boston Red Sox and had allowed three runs in his time on the mound. He did not factor in the decision and Young has a 3.38 ERA in his five starts made since his last decision loss.

Brandon Young has not faced the Guardians in 2026, but was forced out early in the 5th Inning in July 2025 after allowing three runs against them.

Prediction

There is still a considerable amount of work to get through between now and the end of the regular season if the Baltimore Orioles are going to earn a spot in the Playoff.

Winning this series will be very important as they look to chase down the Cleveland Guardians for the final Wild Card spot in the American League.

They have begun the right way with a victory on Monday and the Orioles may have the edge on the starting mound to be set up for a series win before the final game of the season between these two teams will be played on Wednesday.
