Napoli

It is increasingly clear that a manager like Antonio Conte is very successful when he comes into a club, but he is not someone who has been able to foster strong relationships that can extend that success over a number of years. A two year reign as manager of Napoli secured another title for the club, but they had little impact in the Champions League in Conte's second season and Inter Milan took over as Italian Champions.

Antonio Conte is out and Max Allegri has taken over having previously had successes with AC Milan and Juventus domestically. He also guided Juventus to the Champions League Final in 2015, which was lost to Barcelona, and 2017, where they were defeated by Real Madrid and that will give Napoli encouragement having failed to make the Knock Out Rounds in the Champions League last season.

Napoli ended last season with consecutive League wins and beat Genoa to open this campaign, but they have since lost to both Como and Inter Milan. The side have won 7 of the last 10 home games in all competitions, but it should be noted that each of the 3 exceptions are in Napoli defeats.

Scott McTominay has been ruled out and is likely to miss the Scotland Nations League games coming up, while Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa is also ruled out.

Arsenal

Some critics may wonder if this Arsenal squad is good enough to win the Champions League, but Mikel Arteta is convinced his personnel can go one better than last season. A strong start to the Premier League campaign, including beating Chelsea from behind, will have strengthened the manager's belief in this squad and Arsenal will be looking to keep the positive momentum behind them through to the September international break.

The Gunners have reached the Quarter Final in 2024, the Semi Final in 2025 and the Final in 2026 as they prepare to try and go one better in the Champions League in June 2027. They topped the League Phase by winning all 8 Champions League ties played and Arsenal finished up unbeaten in all 7 away ties in this competition with 5 of those ending in victories.

Arsenal have won 9 of the last 10 games played in all competitions and have opened this season with 4 straight victories, while conceding for the first time on Sunday. They will make the trip to Naples looking for a fourth away win in a row.

Cristhian Mosquera is unlikely to be risked and the same can be said for players like Jurrien Timber and Bruno Guimaraes, at least not as starters. Some rotation has to be expected, but a strong Arsenal team will be selected.

Head to Head

Arsenal and Napoli have met four times previously and it is the English Premier League club that have won 3 times with Napoli winning once.

They last met in the Europa League Quarter Final in 2019 and Arsenal won both Legs.

Prediction

Any team visiting Naples has to expect an intense, hostile atmosphere and dealing with that is perhaps the biggest challenge rather than the quality of the team that Napoli run out onto the field.

Last season they finished 30th in the Champions League standings, which is a huge failure, and Napoli have already been beaten by two of the Italian representatives in this competition. Both Como and Inter Milan have League wins over Napoli and they have a big gap to bridge against an Arsenal team that have gone one better than the previous campaign in each of the last two Champions League seasons.

Doing that this season will mean winning this trophy for the first time and Arsenal certainly look capable of another deep run.

There may still be some criticising the quality of the attackers, but Arsenal have scored 9 goals in winning 4 games played in the 2026/27 season. They also have one of the tougher defensive units across the continent and that is backed up by the fact that Arsenal conceded three goals in 7 away Champions League games last season.

Backing The Gunners to get this new Champions League season underway with a clean sheet is perhaps too dangerous, but the likelihood is that the English Champions will make an early statement by winning in Naples.

Arsenal are rarely going to blow teams away, but they do not concede many and so backing the visiting team to win a fixture that features fewer than five goals looks the right approach to take.
