Coventry City v Brighton
Football: English Premier League
Sunday 13th September 2026 - Kick Off 2pm
This game is live on TV

Coventry City

Frank Lampard has won the biggest prizes as a player and he is very experienced when it comes to what it takes to perform in the Premier League. He is urging his players to learn very quickly after a difficult return to the top flight for Coventry City, although Lampard may privately be reminding his players that have perhaps deserved more from opening performances.

The Sky Blues are bottom of the early Premier League table having lost all 3 fixtures played, while Coventry City are still searching for an opening League goal. They have a 0-0-1 record at the CBS Arena after Coventry City were beaten by Hull City at end of August and there is some pressure to earn a positive result or two before the first international break of the season.

Coventry City have progressed in the League Cup, while the fans will accept that the 2 of the opening 3 defeats in the Premier League have come at the homes of the previous season's top two. Losing at home to Hull City is the most disappointing of the opening defeats and snapped a 4 game unbeaten run at this Stadium.

Sidiki Cherif is a doubt, while a number of Coventry City squad members are pushing to return to action after the September international break.

Brighton

The Conference League begins in October after Brighton made their way through the Play Off Round of the Qualifiers and that does mean they have enjoyed a full week to prepare for this fixture. Fabian Hurzeler and the fans will be looking for a more consistent performance from the Brighton squad after a couple of setbacks in the top flight.

Opening up with a big home win over Aston Villa will have raised expectations, but The Seagulls have picked up just one more point since then. They are 10th in the early League standings, but Brighton will be travelling to the West Midlands with a 0-0-1 away record.

Brighton were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United last weekend and that follows the 4-3 defeat at Stamford Bridge. It is a result that means Brighton have not won any of the last 5 away games in all competitions and they have been beaten 3 times in that run.

Michael Svoboda, Femi Azeez and Georginho Rutter are all hoping to be available to travel. However, the likes of Mats Wieffer and Jack Hinshelwood are expected back next month.

Head to Head

Brighton beat Coventry City 3-1 in the FA Cup when these two clubs last faced one another in 2018.

Coventry City are unbeaten in the last 5 when hosting The Seagulls and have won 4 of those matches, including the last 3 in a row.

However, this is the first meeting in the West Midlands since December 2011.

Prediction

The failure to back up the stunning opening weekend result against Aston Villa will have been a disappointment for Brighton and they do look a short price to win at the CBS Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Fabian Hurzeler will be largely pleased with the attacking threat that Brighton have posed, but there is work to do defensively and the injuries in the squad are perhaps a big factor.

This looks like a team that will score goals, but Brighton have looked vulnerable when opponents have pushed forward against them.

The Seagulls have also failed to win any of the last 5 away games in all competitions and suffered 3 losses in that time. They did score three goals at Stamford Bridge at the end of last month, but the defensive issues are highlighted from that game as Brighton still failed to pick up a point.

Frank Lampard's Coventry City have not scored a Premier League goal and so it may be difficult to expect them to exploit the Brighton problems.

However, Coventry City have faced Arsenal and Manchester City early in the season and they certainly created problems for the latter last weekend. This is a positive for the newly promoted club, while Coventry City were guilty of one defensive mistake in the 0-1 defeat to Hull City in the opening fixture played here.

They created opportunities in that game, as they did at the Etihad Stadium, and Coventry City may be worth backing to avoid a defeat.

Brighton are a dangerous opponent and could have a couple of key attackers back this weekend, which makes them even more threatening. Despite that, Brighton's recent away form makes them a weak looking favourite and Coventry City may do enough to get off the mark in the top flight.
