Taking two of the three Subway Series games played across this past weekend means control of the Wild Card race is very much retained, but the New York Yankees (86-63) just cannot seem to close the 4 game gap to the American League East leading Tampa Bay Rays. This means it is increasingly likely that the Yankees will once again be hosting rivals Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card Round of the Playoffs.

Less than two weeks remain in the regular season and the Yankees will be looking to pick up some positive momentum and may yet have an opportunity to move past the Rays. The Yankees have won six of the last eight games, which leaves them 4.5 games ahead of the Red Sox for the top Seed in the Wild Card race, while having Aaron Judge back in the batting lineup is a boost.

It hasn't been all good news of late after another couple of batters have had to move on the Disabled List, while Giancarlo Stanton is running out of time to return. Getting healthy is the key for the Yankees who do have a pitching staff capable of giving them a foundation from which to win games, as has been the case throughout this injury hit 2026 season.

They begin this series with the Minnesota Twins (70-79) knowing that they have lost four of the last seven against this opponent, but New York will also noted that the Minnesota hopes of making the post-season have dwindled.

Minnesota have lost five of the last seven games and are 6 games out of the Divisional lead in the American League Central, while also being 5.5 games behind the Wild Card top three. The team know they are not that far away from being in contention, but have admitted it feels fare enough and a strong run over the last thirteen days of the regular season may still not be enough to turn the momentum.

The Twins will hand the ball to Dean Kremer who has plenty of experience of facing the New York Yankees from his time with the Baltimore Orioles. He is making his eighth start of the season for the Twins and Dean Kremer has a 2-1 record with a 4.79 ERA previously.

The pitcher gave up two runs in 5 Innings thrown in his last start and Dean Kremer was rewarded with the win over the Detroit Tigers. In the previous four starts, Kremer had a 0-1 record with a 7.23 ERA, but he will take confidence from his previous outings against the New York Yankees.

The road team will counter through Will Warren who is going to be trying to show what he can give the Yankees in the Playoffs- the pitcher could be used out of the bullpen or a starter.

Will Warren has a 10-6 record and 4.05 ERA in twenty-nine appearances this season and twenty-seven of those have been in starts. He had put together a run of six starts where Warren had a 3.66 ERA before beginning September with his second appearance out of the bullpen when holding the San Diego Padres scoreless in a little over 2 Innings thrown.

Backing that up is his last outing as a starter when Will Warren gave up a single run in 6 Innings thrown against the Colorado Rockies, while Warren allowed two runs into the 7th Inning in his sole start against the Minnesota Twins in 2025.

Prediction

The regular season is winding down and it does feel like the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins are now travelling in different directions.

Dean Kremer's experiences of the Yankees should help, but Will Warren has been pitching well enough to give New York the edge and they can secure the victory in the opener of this series.
