Preview

The early September schedule looked to be giving the San Diego Padres (81-68) a real opportunity to make their case for a Wild Card spot into the Playoff and they have taken full advantage. Back to back sweeps over struggling teams means the Padres have forced their way into the top three of the Wild Card race in the National League and opened up a 2.5 game gap over rivals Arizona Diamondbacks.

It is also a run that has dragged both the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies back into the battle for the post-season spots, but the Padres are only focusing on doing what is right for themselves.

They begin a four game series with the Colorado Rockies (55-94) who have lost seven games in a row and who have the fewest wins in the Major League and so San Diego will be expected to maintain current momentum.

San Diego will hand the ball to Casey Mize who has a 1-3 record and 6.34 ERA in his seven starts since arriving in a trade from the Detroit Tigers. This poor start for his new team means Casey Mize has seen his season ERA dip back to the 2025 levels and the Padres will be keen to see the pitcher return to the form shown for the Tigers that earned him this trade.

Casey Mize is just having a difficult time settling down and has allowed seven runs in shy of 10 Innings thrown in two starts in September. Failing to get into games is a real issue for the pitcher and one he would like to resolve as soon as possible, but Mize can at least remember holding the Colorado Rockies to a single run in 6 Innings thrown last year.

It has been another difficult season for the Rockies and they will be turning to Tomoyuki Sugano on Monday.

The pitcher has a 12-9 record and 5.30 ERA in his twenty-six starts in the Major League in 2026, which is the second season Sugano has thrown at this level. Tomoyuki Sugano does have a 0-4 record in his last five starts and a 9.38 ERA across those, but the Rockies have allowed the pitcher to complete 6 Innings in both starts made in September, even as he has allowed eight runs in his time on the mound.

In April, Tomoyuki Sugano pitched twice against the San Diego Padres and allowed three runs in just under 12 Innings completed. He finished 1-0 from those two starts with the winning performance being at home and that will offer the Rockies and the starter some confidence.

The Padres have won eight of the nine games played against the Colorado Rockies in 2026, although the one loss was in a game started by Tomoyuki Sugano.

Prediction

The San Diego Padres have won seven in a row and the Colorado Rockies have lost seven in a row so it is clear where the momentum is right now.

It is important for the road team to keep winning as they bid to earn a spot in the post-season, but that will also need an improvement from Casey Mize.

He can at least handle this struggling batting lineup to give the Padres a chance to win, although Tomoyuki Sugano has produced his best form against San Diego in both starts against them this season.

Despite that, recent outings have been difficult for the 36 year old as the season winds down and Sugano may not have it all his own way on Monday in the opener of this four game set.
