Two late goals put a gloss on the final scoreline, but not in favour of Bristol City as they suffered a 4-1 defeat at St Mary's on Saturday. Despite the result, manager Michael Skubala was pleased with much of the performance produced by his new team and he will just be trying to make sure the players understand how to be better at protecting the counter attack that allowed Southampton to punish them at the end.

The Robins have been seen as a team that could challenge for a Play Off spot with the expansion of those places down to 8th in the Championship. They have earned 10 points this season and Bristol City are 11th in the standings, but they have an opportunity to go into Saturday's fixtures top of the pile if they can win home League games to be played on Tuesday and Friday.

Bristol City were upset 0-1 by Walsall in the League Cup First Round before the Championship season begun, but they had won 3 League games in a row ahead of the trip to the South Coast to take on Southampton. The side may have opened the season with consecutive defeats at Ashton Gate without scoring a goal, but Bristol City did edge past Portsmouth most recently.

Lincoln City

Pre-season odds will never determine how a group of players perform on the pitch and Hull City are defying those odds in the Premier League. The same can be said for Lincoln City in the second tier and a win at Deepdale on Saturday means the squad are filled with early confidence.

They won the League One title last season, but the departure of Michael Skubala to Bristol City felt like a real blow for Lincoln City. Instead The Imps are in 16th place in the Championship table and have already earned 8 points, while they also have a 2-0-1 away record having scored 3 goals and conceded 2.

Lincoln City were thumped 4-0 at Bournemouth in the League Cup Third Round last week, which led to the rearrangement of this fixture, but they are unbeaten in 4 in the Championship. The win at Preston North End makes it consecutive away League victories for Lincoln City and both by the same 0-1 scoreline.

Head to Head

Bristol City hosted Lincoln City in the League Cup in November 2022 and they were beaten 1-3 that day.

This will be the first League meeting between the clubs since the 1985/86 season in the third tier of English Football.

Prediction

Michael Skubala has already made a positive impact at Ashton Gate and the travelling Lincoln City supporters have to be grateful to the former manager who guided them to the League One title.

It does mean Skubala should be familiar with what Lincoln City want to do and his Bristol City team will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing 4-1 loss at Southampton.

The final score does not come close to reflecting how that fixture played out at St Mary's, but Bristol City have found it a bit more difficult to impose themselves at home. This will be the area that needs to improve if Bristol City are challenging for a top eight finish in the Division, but The Robins did win last time out here and may have enough in the final third to edge past Lincoln City.

Credit has to be given to the pre-season favourites for relegation for the way they have knuckled down in recent fixtures having quickly settled in this level of football.

However, it is Michael Skubala's knowledge of the away team that may just give Bristol City enough of an edge to earn the three points.

Lincoln City have been pretty well organised, but have not created a lot of chances away from home, and that may allow Bristol City to bounce back from a poor result last time out.
