Football: English League Cup Third Round
Wednesday 16th September 2026 - Kick Off 8pm
This game is live on TV
Manchester United
Everyone at Old Trafford must have been really happy to hear that the referee body wanted to apologise to Manchester United for getting a decision massively wrong in the derby just hours earlier, one that cost the team all three points against one of the big rivals(!) Michael Carrick and the board are right to be absolutely disgusted by a group of officials who could not make the right decision despite having the use of VAR on Sunday and it has put the manager under early pressure.
The League Cup might not be a big priority for the club, but silverware is always important and a poor start to the Premier League campaigns means Manchester United need something to turn the momentum around. Last season they were beaten in opening ties in both the League Cup and FA Cup, which added to the frustration at the club, but Manchester United have won domestic Cups as recently as 2023 and 2024.
Manchester United have won 2 of the opening 5 games played in all competitions, but they have also suffered a couple of defeats in that opening schedule. Both wins have been at Old Trafford where Manchester United still have a very strong record under Michael Carrick, despite the 0-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
Wholesale changes may not be the plan for Manchester United, but they will be looking to give players opportunities. One of those was expected to be JJ Gabriel who has been making waves in the Academy, but behind the scenes tensions exploded on Tuesday and the youngster seemingly wants out. Players like Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, Shea Lacey, Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko can come into the starting eleven.
Brighton
Fabian Hurzeler's men earned a big win at the CBS Arena on Sunday and that has given Brighton a real shot of confidence as they bid to round out the week ahead of the September international break in style. They will get the European campaign underway next month, but Brighton fans will also be expecting the club to take the domestic Cup competitions seriouly.
In recent years that has been the case for Brighton in the FA Cup, but they have not reached the Quarter Final of the League Cup since the 1978/79 season. The Seagulls have reached the FA Cup Semi Final in 2023 and the Quarter Final in 2025, while 5 of the last 6 League Cup runs have ended in the Fourth Round.
Brighton will enter this fixture with a single loss in the last 6 games in all competitions, while the victory at Coventry City means they have won half of those fixtures. That win on Sunday also ended a 5 away game winless run for The Seagulls.
Like many Premier League clubs, Brighton will likely deploy the squad for this League Cup Third Round tie. Being involved in European Football does give Fabian Hurzeler more of an excuse to rest key players, while Brighton have a big Premier League home game coming up this weekend.
Head to Head
Manchester United beat Brighton twice in the Premier League last season.
However, it was Brighton who won 1-2 at Old Trafford when the teams met in the FA Cup Third Round.
That result does mean Brighton have won 4 of the last 5 visits to Old Trafford in all competitions.
Prediction
The expectation is that both Manchester United and Brighton are going to be rotating the squad for this League Cup Third Round tie and that does mean it is a tougher game to predict.
Brighton have plenty of depth to match Manchester United if there are wholesale changes and this is a tie that could see chances at both ends.
The Seagulls won a FA Cup tie at Old Trafford last season, and they have a very proud record when visiting this part of the North West in recent times. It will give them confidence, although Brighton will likely be tested by the Manchester United attackers as the home team bid to avoid a third straight opening tie defeat in domestic Cup competitions.
Three goals were shared out when they met in the FA Cup back in January, but the previous 3 matches at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Brighton had finished with at least four goals scored.
An attacking game is expected on Wednesday night and that latter sequence can begin again with both teams capable of scoring at least twice on the night, but a 3-1 scoreline either way looking like a real runner.
