Leeds United
Daniel Farke has made it clear he wants to see Leeds United progress as a club and has stated he will remain in charge as long as the board and the manager are aligned in their ambitions. Consolidation in the Premier League last season thanks to a strong second half of the campaign will have raised some expectations and Leeds United do look an outsider to challenge for European Football.
After the 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Monday night, some fans may be reassessing their expectations and dream of much more than merely playing in any UEFA competition. Instead the target could soon become the Champions League after Leeds United moved into 3rd place with 8 points from a possible 12 being secured. The side have a 1-1-0 record at Elland Road and a strong season here would go a long way in pushing Leeds United towards a return to Europe.
Leeds United blew a 0-2 lead at Chelsea in the League Cup Third Round and were beaten 6-3, but they have only lost 1 of the last 13 Premier League games played. The thumping win over Newcastle United has extended the unbeaten run at Elland Road to 7 games in all competitions and Leeds United have won 5 of those matches.
Joe Rodon and Mateo Joseph are both missing, but the former should return after the international break.
Crystal Palace
The final score will have pleased all Crystal Palace fans, but Pierre Sage will be demanding more control from his players even after the 4-0 win over Lech Poznan. This is still the stage of his tenure where the new manager is trying to stamp his authority on the team, but Sage will feel happier having the likes of Ismaila Sarr back within the squad.
Opening up the Europa League campaign with a victory is a positive, but Crystal Palace are 16th in the Premier League table with just 3 points secured following the 2-3 home defeat to Ipswich Town last weekend. The Eagles have a 1-0-1 away record in the top flight where they have scored 3 goals and conceded 4.
Crystal Palace have won 3 of the last 4 games in all competitions, but a couple of those victories have been in Cup settings and the home loss to Ipswich Town will have hurt the supporters. The side had not won any of 5 away Premier League games and they had lost 4 times in that stretch, but Crystal Palace fought back twice before eventually beating Fulham 2-3 at Craven Cottage most recently.
Axel Disasi was sent off last weekend and he is serving a suspension. Dean Henderson and Jean-Philippe Mateta are both hopeful to return to action following this three week international break.
Head to Head
Leeds United took four points from Crystal Palace last season and thumped them 4-1 here.
That result means Leeds United have won 8 of the last 9 at Elland Road against Crystal Palace.
However, the exception was a fixture played in the 2022/23 Premier League season when Crystal Palace scored five goals in a win here.
Prediction
Clubs like Bournemouth and Sunderland are playing in European Football and it will all be a learning curve for them, but that should not be such a case for Crystal Palace.
They won the Conference League last season to earn a spot in the Europa League and Crystal Palace won 4-0 against Lech Poznan on Thursday.
Pierre Sage will be hoping the more wins that can be recorded, the quicker the squad will take on board what he wants from them.
Key players should return from injury by the time the Premier League resumes in three weeks time following this weekend, and that squad depth will also help Crystal Palace.
However, they will travel to Yorkshire with the likes of Ismaila Sarr perhaps not quite ready to start and Crystal Palace are still a work in progress.
There has been little wrong with the attacking intent, but The Eagles have struggled defensively and that was evident in the win on Thursday night. In the Premier League they have already conceded 11 goals, which is the most in the Division, but Crystal Palace have shown they can create problems with the style that Pierre Sage wants to put on the field and that should be the case again on Sunday.
Leeds United will be very confident they can exploit the defensive issues that Crystal Palace have been having, especially after scoring four goals in the thumping win over Newcastle United on Monday night.
Daniel Farke's team have been really good as an attacking unit in the early part of the season, but Brentford showed that Leeds United can be attacked with confidence and this has the makings of an entertaining fixture.
They did play out a goalless draw at Selhurst Park last season, but the game at Elland Road was filled with goals and this is a fixture that should feature at least three on the day.
