Penrith enter this game with the benefit of a week's rest, a home venue and an extraordinary amount of big-game experience, but there is one obvious storyline dominating preparations. Nathan Cleary - The Panthers superstar halfback suffered a stress-related bone issue in his foot during the qualifying-final victory over the Roosters, but he has been named at halfback for Sunday. The extra week between games has given Cleary valuable recovery time, and Penrith co-captain Isaah Yeo has expressed confidence that he will be ready. Cleary doesn't just provide kicking and attacking ability. He controls the rhythm of the game. He knows when to slow things down, when to turn a team around with a long kick and when to attack the defensive line.

The Panthers have also welcomed back Isaah Yeo to the starting side, with Lindsay Smith moving to prop. Luke Garner is back in the squad after recovering from a minor groin issue, while Jack Cogger returns from suspension and provides experienced cover from the bench should Cleary need to leave the field. Yeo's return is particularly significant, the whole team looked more settled since their captain returned from his long-term pectoral injury, and his ability to link with Mitch Kenny and Cleary around the middle gives Penrith another layer of attacking structure.

The forward pack is once again built around Moses Leota, Lindsay Smith, Yeo, Liam Martin and Isaiah Papali'i. Leota brings the hard carries, Smith has developed into an important middle forward, while Martin and Papali'i provide plenty of aggression and second-phase ability on the edges.

The backline - Dylan Edwards, Brian To'o, Blaize Talagi, Casey McLean and Tom Jenkins provide an excellent combination of experience, athleticism and finishing power. To’o has scored nine tries in nine career games against Newcastle, which suggests he has consistently found ways to exploit this particular matchup.

Newcastle Knights

The Knights have turned their season into something quite remarkable. After finishing last, 17th in 2025, Newcastle climbed to seventh this year and then survived two elimination finals to reach a preliminary final for the first time since 2013. And they have done it through defence, something that has not been a strong point for the Knights in a long time.

Their 20-10 victory over South Sydney was followed by a tense 12-10 win over the Warriors. Those aren't scorelines built around trying to blow opponents off the park. Newcastle cannot simply rely on their defensive structure and hope to survive for 80 minutes against Penrith. At some point they will need to create points, and Ponga is the player most capable of producing something from nothing.

Dane Gagai, Bradman Best, Greg Marzhew and Dominic Young give Newcastle plenty of size and finishing ability. Marzhew is also chasing one more try to equal Dominic Young's Newcastle club record of 25 tries in a season. Bradman Best is a powerful centre who has been one of Newcastle's most important attacking weapons throughout 2026, and if the Knights can generate quick play-the-balls, his ability to straighten the defensive line could cause Penrith problems.

Fletcher Sharpe has been one of the emerging stories of Newcastle's season, while Smith has the responsibility of steering the side around the park. They face a completely different challenge to anything they've encountered in the previous two weeks.

The Warriors and Rabbitohs were elimination games, but Penrith are a side that has spent years mastering preliminary finals - the Knights will need to execute almost perfectly to progress.

Penrith, in contrast, have had the luxury of a week off after beating the Roosters 19-12 in their qualifying final. There is another intriguing element to this match, despite the long history between the clubs, this will be their first-ever finals meeting. The sides have played 60 times since Newcastle entered the competition in 1988, with Penrith having won nine of their past 10 encounters.

The Key halves Battle, Nathan Cleary v Sandon Smith/Fletcher Sharpe. Everything starts with Cleary. There will naturally be questions about his injured foot, and Newcastle have every reason to test him defensively and force him to make plenty of movements. But if Cleary is moving comfortably, Penrith have a major advantage in game management and the Knights have to make him uncomfortable if they are to cause a huge upset. That doesn't necessarily mean rushing out of the line or trying to knock him out of the game. It means forcing Cleary to operate from poor field position, denying him time and making him kick under pressure and if Newcastle can do that for 80 minutes, they give themselves a genuine chance. Sharpe is becoming a very influential player, busting tackles and superb speed off the mark, he is crucial if the knights are any hope here.

The Knights middle has been impressive all year, with Tyson Frizell, Cody Hopwood, Mat Croker and Phoenix Crossland providing plenty of work rate and toughness but Penrith bring an entirely different level of finals experience. Leota, Yeo, Martin and the Panthers interchange forwards have spent years playing these high-pressure games.

If the knights are going to upset the Panthers, Newcastle need to win the opening 20 minutes. If they can get on the front foot early, force Penrith into errors and establish field position, the pressure starts to move onto the Panthers. But if Penrith dominate territory from the opening whistle, the Knights could find themselves defending repeat sets for long periods.

The bookies have Penrith as a substantial favourite, but the 10.5-point handicap is where the betting becomes more interesting. This is a very difficult game for Newcastle to win, but I don't think the Knights should be underestimated. Their last two finals have shown that they are comfortable playing low-scoring, high-pressure football. They have also demonstrated an ability to defend their own line when the opposition has possession - that is exactly what they will need again.

I expect Newcastle to make this uncomfortable for Penrith early, but as the game progresses, I think Cleary's kicking game, the Panthers middle control and their superior finals experience in this exact situation will gradually take over. Penrith have won five of their past six preliminary finals since 2020.
