Football: UEFA Nations League Match Day 4
Tuesday 6th October 2026 - Kick Off 7:45pm
This game is live on TV
Scotland
International Football in the UEFA Confederation is having a few changes made to the Qualification for major international tournaments as well as how the Nations League will look in the 2028/29 season. This may have increased the importance for a national team like Scotland to earn their place in League A of the next running of this competition, while a strong campaign would also mean stronger Seeding for Euro 2028 which is going to be hosted in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The win in North Macedonia on Match Day 3 means Scotland are 3rd in this League B Nations League Group, but they share the same number of points as the opponent to be faced on Match Day 4. Chasing down Switzerland for the automatic promotion spot looks unlikely, but finishing 2nd in this Group is the target for Scotland who had not scored in the first two games played under Sebastien Pocognoli before the win in Skopje.
Scotland have picked up all of the 4 points in this Group away from home with the sole fixture here ending in a 0-3 defeat to Switzerland. That was largely down to Jack Hendry being sent off with just 11 minutes on the clock, but the win over North Macedonia has snapped a 4 game winless run. Scotland had won 4 of the previous 5 home competitive games before the defeat to the Swiss.
Jack Hendry has served a suspension and is available, but Scott McKenna was sent off on Saturday and is going to miss out.
Slovenia
Despite scoring first in Lucerne, Slovenia were not able to contain Switzerland and the 2-1 defeat means it looks a straight fight between them and Scotland for a spot in the Play Off Round of the Nations League. Like Scotland, Slovenia will also be keen to finish as high as possible to improve Seeding for the Euro 2028 Qualifying draw coming up at the conclusion of the Nations League Group Stage and so there is plenty of motivation ahead of this fixture.
The absence of Benjamin Sesko for this international round of fixtures was always going to be tough for Slovenia to deal with, but they have picked up 4 points in the section. All of those points have been earned at home following the defeat in Switzerland this past weekend.
Slovenia did beat North Macedonia last week, but that is the sole win from the last 13 competitive games played and they were uncompetitive when it came to the World Cup Qualifiers played. They have failed to win any of the last 6 away competitive games, but it should be noted that 4 of those matches have ended in draws and Slovenia's 2 defeats have both been in Switzerland.
Head to Head
These two teams met on Match Day 1 in Ljubljana and the fixture ended goalless.
Prior to this Nations League Group, Scotland and Slovenia last played in the 2018 World Cup Qualifying Group and the game hosted by the Scots ended 1-0 in favour of the home team.
Scotland are unbeaten in 2 home games against Slovenia.
Prediction
Stronger finishing would have likely led to a Scotland win when they visited Ljubljana on Match Day 1 of this Nations League Group.
They won in Skopje, but Scotland were pretty wasteful on that day as well and new manager Sebastien Pocognoli will be looking for his players to display better composure in their bid to finish in the top two of this section.
Hampden Park will always give the Scotland players a positive atmosphere in which to perform and they have been pretty good here prior to the 0-3 defeat to Switzerland. That was a game impacted by an early sending off and a Penalty awarded to the Swiss, but Scotland have to show a bit more quality in the final third all the same.
Slovenia have missed the presence of Benjamin Sesko- like Scotland, they have beaten a struggling North Macedonian team and lost to Switzerland, although Slovenia offered more resistance in Lucerne than some may have expected.
Winning matches has been an issue, but Slovenia have drawn 4 of the last 6 away competitive games played and that deserves a lot of respect.
When they met in Slovenia, Scotland were easily the better team but missed some quality chances and that cannot happen again.
You have to be aware of what Slovenia can do as they dig their heels in knowing they perhaps have the easier two matches remaining, but Scotland may just use the crowd to eventually overwhelm this opponent. As long as they can find that composure in the final third, Scotland may have enough to secure three priceless points in their bid to earn the spot behind Switzerland within this League B Group.
