2026-10-10 - Sunderland vs Brighton

A Sports Betting Preview by Auls

Sunderland v Brighton
Football: English Premier League
Saturday 10th October 2026 - Kick Off 3pm

Sunderland

Regis Le Bris will have been disappointed his Sunderland team did not earn a positive result at Manchester City before the international break considering the performance they put together in the 5-3 defeat. That disappointment will have turned to frustration after Brian Brobbey returned from international duty with an injury and one that could keep him out of key matches.

The defeat at the Etihad Stadium means Sunderland are 14th in the Premier League table with 4 points secured, but they have played the top two from last season. The Black Cats have a 1-0-1 record at the Stadium of Light where they have scored 1 goal and conceded 2.

Sunderland have not won any of the last 3 Premier League games and have lost consecutive top flight fixtures against Arsenal and Manchester City, but they have earned Cup victories in the League Cup and Europa League in that stretch. The home defeat to Arsenal is the exception in a run of 4 wins in 5 games played at the Stadium of Light.

Brian Brobbey and Noah Sadiki are both doubts, while Dan Ballard is expected to miss out. Reinildo is available after serving a suspension.

Brighton

The thumping win over Arsenal in the Premier League meant Brighton made some big headlines and Fabian Hurzeler has also enhanced his personal reputation as a manager. None of that will matter if Brighton cannot return from the international break ready to put another strong run of form together with fans having expectations raised following a good start to the campaign.

The Conference League Group Stage will begin during the week, but Brighton will be focusing on this Premier League game after moving up into 3rd place in the early standings. The Seagulls have a 1-0-1 record away from home where they have scored 8 goals and conceded 4.

Brighton are not only unbeaten in 4 games in all competitions since losing 4-3 at Chelsea in the Premier League, but they have won 3 matches in a row. They scored five goals in winning at Coventry City in the last away Premier League game played, and Brighton followed up by coming from 2-0 behind to beat Manchester United 2-3 at Old Trafford in the League Cup Third Round.

Lewis Dunk, Pascal Struijk, Mats Wieffer, Jack Hinselwood and Kaoru Mitoma could all return to action this weekend.

Head to Head

Brighton took four points from Sunderland last season and the majority were earned in a 0-1 win at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland had won 5 in a row at home against Brighton in all competitions before that loss in March.

Prediction

The early results produced by Brighton look even more impressive when you think of the amount of injuries within the squad.

The three week international break may not have been seen as ideal for most clubs, but it has given a number of key players a chance to recover and Brighton's squad travelling to the North East could have considerable depth to it.

Fabian Hurzeler has a number of attacking players who can make a difference and Brighton won here in March.

The international break has given Brighton an opportunity to clear up some of the injuries in the squad, but it has been a difficult time for Sunderland fans.

Brian Brobbey had to be sent back to the North East earlier than expected when picking up an injury while competing for the Netherlands. His absence would be a huge blow after his hat-trick at Manchester City in the last game before the international window opened up, and Sunderland have lacked a bit of consistency early on.

The Black Cats have been strong at the Stadium of Light for the last twelve months, but containing Brighton may be just beyond them with the defence playing as it has. Injuries and suspensions have not helped and this Brighton attack has been looking very good through the opening weeks of the season, which may just see them edge to the victory for a second consecutive season in this part of the North East.
