Manchester United

After the 1-1 draw with Fulham, Manchester United fans may have been expecting the next three weeks to be dominating the footballing headlines with people likely to be questioning the start made to the season under Michael Carrick. Instead, Manchester City's guilty charges have been the big story and that will have kept some pressure from the shoulders of the manager and the squad at Old Trafford.

Pressure will come quickly for Michael Carrick if he cannot help Manchester United move forward and they are heading out of the first international break of the season in 12th place in the Premier League table. The side have a 1-0-1 record at Old Trafford where they have scored 5 goals and conceded 3.

Manchester United needed a late goal to salvage the draw at Craven Cottage, but that does mean they have won 1 of the last 5 games in all competitions and had lost consecutive fixtures before the 1-1 draw with Fulham. The side had won 5 in a row at Old Trafford in all competitions, but Manchester United have been beaten by Manchester City and Brighton in the last couple played here.

Patrick Dorgu picked up an injury on international duty and is a doubt along with Matthijs de Ligt, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Benjamin Sesko. Bruno Fernandes is playing through the pain according to his national manager, but is not expected to miss this game.

Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino believes his Tottenham Hotspur squad deserves to be awarded trophies that Manchester City won after hearing the news that the latter had been found guilty of the charges the Premier League set against them. That will not make 2026 Tottenham Hotspur fans feel much better after watching the team make yet another poor start to the Premier League campaign.

Roberto De Zerbi did help Tottenham Hotspur avoid a hugely damaging relegation last season, but that meant back to back 17th place finishes. After five games of this season, Spurs are bottom of the Premier League table and they have been really struggling in the final third. The side have a 0-1-1 away record in the top flight where Spurs have yet to score, while conceding 3 times.

Tottenham Hotspur have won just 2 of the last 10 games in all competitions, while they entered the international break behind back to back defeats. Only a VAR intervention has prevented Tottenham Hotspur from having lost 4 away games in a row in all competitions.

Micky van den Ven is expected to be available, but both Jan Paul van Hecke and Pedro Porro are doubts.

Head to Head

Manchester United took four points from Tottenham Hotspur last season and the majority were earned from a 2-0 home win in February.

They had not won either of the previous 2 games at Old Trafford against Tottenham Hotspur before last season- those had ended in a draw and a defeat.

Prediction

When you manage big clubs, you have to expect pressure to build pretty quickly and that has to be the case for both Michael Carrick and Roberto De Zerbi.

The losing manager will certainly be feeling the heat and that does mean there will be some tension at Old Trafford in this late Saturday kick off.

Injuries have been an early issue for both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, while both managers will feel the results have not always reflected the performances.

Ultimately that is not going to matter to the fans and it is the results that will count.

Both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will believe they have enough firepower to hurt the other, although Spurs have struggled with the composure needed in the final third. With the chances being created, you would expect that to change, but Tottenham Hotspur may struggle to find the right balance against a Manchester United team that had been very good at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick before back to back defeats here.

You would expect both teams to hit the back of the net, but Manchester United have been looking a bit more dangerous in the final third.

This could be the key to a fixture that means so much to both teams, and managers, and Manchester United may have a bit too much for Tottenham Hotspur when all is said and done at Old Trafford this weekend.
