It has been a miserable opening for Union Berlin. They have just one point from four games and have already conceded 17 goals, including seven in the latest defeat at Bayern Munich. That leaves them with the worst defensive record in the Bundesliga and a minus-13 goal difference.

The problem is not limited to the Bayern Munich result. Union Berlin also lost 4-0 at Bayer Leverkusen and 1-3 at home to Schalke 04 after opening the campaign with a 3-3 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt. They have scored only four times themselves.

Playing in Berlin offers some encouragement, as they picked up their only point at home, but they still conceded six goals across those two home games.

Coach Mauro Lustrinelli will be without Andrik Markgraf and Stanley Nsoki, while Andrej Ilić is still working towards full fitness.

SV Elversberg

SV Elversberg are living a very different reality. The promoted side have seven points from four matches and sit seventh, having already beaten Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach before taking Bayern Munich all the way in a 1-2 defeat. They then drew 0-0 at Schalke 04 in their last game.

Their numbers tell the story better than the table. SV Elversberg have scored eight goals to Union Berlin's four and conceded seven compared with Union's 17. They have also been far more aggressive without the ball, winning more duels and sprints than Union Berlin.

Lukas Petkov and Cole Campbell have been particularly useful in giving SV Elversberg an outlet from wide areas, while Maurice Krattenmacher has already scored three Bundesliga goals. Vincent Wagner's team also have a solid away record, taking four points from their two Bundesliga trips so far.

The Betting Verdict

I find it hard to ignore SV Elversberg here. Union Berlin have conceded 17 goals in four matches and have looked vulnerable against teams that can attack with intensity, while SV Elversberg have shown they can compete with much stronger opposition.

I don't quite want to take the away win at close to 3.00, though. SV Elversberg on double chance gives us some cushion, especially with Union Berlin still searching for their first victory.

SV Elversberg should be able to exploit Union Berlin’s ongoing defensive problems, and I think backing SV Elversberg to win or draw at around 1.60 is worth a shot.
