Köln have had a mixed start, and they are a bit difficult to get a read on right now. They beat TSG Hoffenheim 3-2 on opening day, then lost 4-1 against VfB Stuttgart, drew 1-1 with Werder Bremen, and went down 2-1 at Hamburger SV. They have also struggled to keep clean sheets, which is another big problem.

They are also facing problems in attack. Thijs Dallinga suffered a knee injury in the friendly against Viktoria Köln and will be out for several months, while Ragnar Ache also picked up a muscle injury. Both forwards will miss the derby.

That leaves Köln with fewer options up front, but they have still scored in all of their four Bundesliga games. And with their defense yet to settle, this could be another open game.

Borussia Mönchengladbach

It is hard to find much positive in Borussia Mönchengladbach's Bundesliga start. They have lost all four games, conceding 16 goals in the process. They lost 3-0 to RB Leipzig, 3-4 to SV Elversberg, 5-0 to SC Freiburg and 3-4 to Mainz.

They are starting with a new coach, Alexander Blessin, who will be in charge for his first competitive game. The former St.Pauli boss was brought in after Eugen Polanski was dismissed, and he has had the international break to work with the squad before this derby.

Defensive concerns remain, though. Borussia Mönchengladbach have conceded at least 3+ goals in every Bundesliga game so far, while Köln have also been conceding regularly.

The last two meetings finished 3-3 and 3-1, so there is plenty here to like about the goals markets.

The Betting Verdict

I don’t want to pick a winner because I don't trust either team. Köln have home advantage, but they have not looked convincing enough to trust, while Borussia Mönchengladbach are still searching for their first point of the season under a new coach.

I prefer over 2.5 goals at around 1.50. Borussia Mönchengladbach have already conceded 16 in four games, and Köln have also shown they can score and concede.

I can see another open Rhine derby, with the game ending in something like an entertaining 2-2 draw.
