Coventry City
A first Premier League win in twenty-five years will have given the Coventry City squad a huge boost after a difficult return to the top flight. The only disappointment is that the victory was earned just prior to the extended first international break of the season and Frank Lampard will be hoping his players are ready to pick up from where they left off.
The win at the City Ground was not quite enough to drag Coventry City out of the bottom three, but they will feel better having 3 points on the board even if they are 18th in the Premier League standings. That position could have become a little worse by the time The Sky Blues kick off in the last Premier League fixture of the weekend, but the focus is solely on improving the 0-0-2 home record in this Division.
Coventry City had lost 4 in a row in all competitions and looked to be suffering, but the 0-1 win at Nottingham Forest will have offered a real lift for all associated with the club. They have to find a way to improve at The CBS Arena where Coventry City have lost both Premier League games without scoring a goal. The side have also been beaten 1-3 here by Aston Villa in the League Cup Third Round.
Taiwo Awoniyi is still suspended, but the likes of Milan van Ewijk and Joel Latibeaudiere are hoping to be available for selection. Others are still in the recovery stage of their return from injuries, which has stretched the Frank Lampard options.
Newcastle United
It is hard to know exactly what kind of expectations Newcastle United have this season after losing manager Eddie Howe just days before the start of the new campaign. Fans of this club will be taking a keener interest in the Manchester City charges than a lot of others having felt the Saudi part-owners of Newcastle United have not been able to invest as they would have liked, but Matthias Jaissle and his squad have to simply focus on picking up results.
You would have to feel the minimum aim for The Magpies this season is getting back into Europe and also having strong domestic Cup runs. With that said, Newcastle United are 9th in the Premier League standings and have earned 8 points, while they have a 1-0-1 away record where they have scored 3 goals and conceded 4.
Newcastle United hung on for a 2-1 home win over Hull City in the last Premier League game played and they have won 4 of the last 6 games in all competitions. However, the last away Premier League fixture ended in a thumping 4-1 loss at Leeds United and that means Newcastle United have lost 4 of the last 6 away League games played.
The manager is keeping his cards close to the chest in relation to injuries- Joelinton is expected to be involved and the likes of Nico Gonzalez should also be available. There are more doubts about Jacob Ramsey, Anthony Elanga and Tino Livramento, although all of the current injured players are expected back in action before the end of this month.
Head to Head
These clubs last met in the 2009/10 season when both played in the Championship and it was Newcastle United who won both League matches.
The Magpies have won the last 2 League matches hosted by Coventry City.
Prediction
Despite the win at Nottingham Forest three weeks ago, the layers are still not very convinced about Coventry City and the odds for this fixture makes that very clear.
Newcastle United are favourites to win, which is perhaps not a massive surprise, but they are very close to being priced at odds on to do that.
Matthias Jaissle will be pleased with the start made to the season, but the underlying numbers suggest there is still work to do. Newcastle United have struggled for a consistent threat in the final third in both away Premier League games played, although there is quality in the squad that means opportunities have been taken when they have been created.
It makes Newcastle United dangerous, but Coventry City have to take some encouragement from the way Hull City pushed The Magpies all the way in a 2-1 defeat at St James' Park. More composure in the final third may have led to a positive result, while it should be stated that Newcastle United are not nearly as convincing away from home than they are when playing in front of The Toon Army.
Frank Lampard's team have been having a tough time since being promoted back into the Premier League, but the win over Nottingham Forest will offer some belief. They are still struggling in the final third, but Coventry City will be happier with the defensive performance and they do need to improve on that side of the pitch if they are going to find a way to consolidate back at this level.
Last season Newcastle United finished with 4 points when visiting the three newly promoted sides, and had the same number when playing away from home at the three clubs eventually relegated.
The Magpies have pace in the final third that makes them dangerous on the counter attack, but they still look a short price seeing as they have lost 4 of the last 6 away Premier League games. The 4-1 loss at Leeds United was particularly concerning and it may give Coventry City the confidence to earn a first positive result at The CBS Arena this season.
