Royal Union SG vs Real Sociedad
Football: UEFA Europa League - League Phase - Round 2
King Power at Den Dreef (Leuven), Belgium
Thursday, 15th October 2026 - Kick-Off 18:45 CEST

Royal Union SG

Royal Union Saint-Gilloise have enjoyed an impressive start to the new campaign and approach this European fixture full of confidence. David Hubert's side opened their Europa League campaign with an excellent 3-0 away victory over Viktoria Plzen, immediately establishing themselves as a team capable of competing at this level.

The Belgian outfit have also been difficult to beat domestically, although their latest league outing ended in a 1-1 home draw against OH Leuven. Their attacking performances have been particularly encouraging, with Relebohile Mofokeng emerging as an important figure in the final third.

However, Union SG face several selection problems ahead of Thursday's encounter. Adem Zorgane and Raul Florucz are suspended, while Ross Sykes and Kevin Mac Allister are among the injured players. Those absences could affect the hosts' ability to maintain their usual intensity against experienced European opposition.

Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad travel to Belgium looking to recover from a disappointing start to their Europa League campaign. Pellegrino Matarazzo's team suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Bournemouth in their opening European fixture, making a positive result particularly important this time.

The Basque side have shown encouraging signs in La Liga, most recently securing a 3-2 victory over Deportivo La Coruna. Their attacking options include Mikel Oyarzabal, Goncalo Guedes and Ander Barrenetxea, while Carlos Soler provides additional creativity from midfield.

There are some defensive concerns, with Jon Aramburu and Alvaro Odriozola unavailable. Nevertheless, Sociedad possess enough individual quality and European experience to compete against the Belgian champions, particularly if they can control possession and limit Union's opportunities on the counterattack.

Betting Verdict

Royal Union SG deserve considerable respect after their convincing victory in Plzen, but backing the Belgian side to record another European success may be risky considering their selection problems.

Real Sociedad certainly have weaknesses, particularly away from home, but their recent domestic performances suggest they are capable of producing a positive response following their opening Europa League defeat.

The visitors also have greater experience of competing against high-quality opposition in one of Europe's strongest domestic leagues. With Oyarzabal, Guedes and Soler available, they should have enough attacking quality to trouble Union's defence.

Importantly, Sociedad do not necessarily need to win for this selection to succeed. A draw would represent a reasonable result for the visitors, while Union's suspensions could make it more difficult for the hosts to impose themselves.

Considering the circumstances, Real Sociedad Double Chance (X2) looks an interesting option at 1.57. The Spanish side should be competitive enough to avoid defeat in what promises to be a closely contested European encounter.
