If automatic promotion is the ambition for Wolves this season, there is little doubt that the home form has to improve for them to finish in the top two of what looks a very competitive Championship once again. During the week they played a make up game from earlier in the season, but Wolves were once again dropping points at Molineux when facing Portsmouth.

That result leaves Wolves in 7th place in the Championship table and they are 4 points behind 2nd placed West Ham United with almost a quarter of the season in the books. The dropped points on Tuesday means Wolves now have a 2-2-1 record at Molineux in the second tier and they have secured more away points than from fixtures played at home.

Wolves have won 1 of the last 4 games played in the League, but they look to have moved past the consecutive defeats to Middlesbrough and Bolton Wanderers by avoiding losses in the last couple of games. However, the draw with Portsmouth followed a home defeat to Bolton Wanderers and there will be pressure on Wolves to bounce back on Saturday.

Watford

There is still a feeling of inevitability that Watford are going to be searching for a fourth permanent manager in the calendar year sooner rather than later, but Alessio Dionisi oversaw an important win last weekend. A poor run of form had not escaped the notice of the board, but Watford rallied for a 2-0 win over Charlton Athletic and that has given Dionisi a bit more time.

The pressure remains firmly on the manager with Watford sitting in 20th place in the Championship and 3 points above the bottom three, but that win over Charlton Athletic feels really important for everyone at the club. The Hornets do travel to Molineux with a poor 0-1-4 away record and they have scored just twice in those fixtures.

Watford had lost 4 games in a row in the League and they had been outscored 2-12 in that run, which makes the 2-0 win over The Addicks feel like a huge positive at both ends of the field. The side have lost each of the last 4 away League games and they were thumped 5-1 at Cardiff City most recently.

Head to Head

These two clubs last met in the 2021/22 Premier League season and it was Wolves who won both fixtures.

Wolves have won the last couple of games when hosting Watford.

Prediction

There is some pressure on both of the managers of these respective clubs and both could do with a big performance.

Wolves fans are expecting a return to the Premier League and that has perhaps made it tougher for the players to perform at Molineux. The 1-1 draw with Portsmouth means more points dropped at home, although Wolves have continued to produce decent performances and will be looking for a bit more composure in the final third.

They may be hosting the right opponent to get back on track this weekend, despite Watford snapping a 4 game losing run with a 2-0 win over Charlton Athletic.

That has kept the wolves from the door, pardon the pun, as far as Alessio Dionisi is concerned, but he remains under pressure at Vicarage Road and can ill-afford to see his team capitulate away from home for the second outing in a row.

In the last away game, Watford were beaten 5-1 at Cardiff City, but the players showed in the win over Charlton Athletic that they are still playing for the manager. That is a boost, but this is a tough away ground to visit and Wolves can get back on track with a relatively comfortable victory in what looks a tough set of Championship fixtures to find selections in this match week.
