SC Freiburg

SC Freiburg have had a rough last week. They lost 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen, went 3-0 down away to Monaco in the UEFA Conference League, and suffered another 1-3 home defeat to Bayern Munich on Sunday.

Julian Schuster made several changes against Bayern Munich, and his team improved late in the game, but Michael Olise's stoppage-time goal ended any hope of a comeback.

The fixture list leaves little recovery time before Wolfsburg visit. SC Freiburg have a Bundesliga match against Augsburg coming up and then another European game against Trabzonspor in Turkey, so Schuster must balance the need to progress in the cup with the physical demands of three matches in a short period.

Patrick Osterhage and Florent Muslija are among the reported absentees, and another rotation is coming up.

Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg arrive with a more encouraging recent 2.Bundesliga record, although they have not been especially convincing defensively.

Wolfsburg are unbeaten in four games (two wins, two draws), most recently drawing 1-1 away against VfL Bochum. They usually score a lot this season, but they also make plenty of defensive errors and concede a lot.

Tobias Strobl's side have had more time to recover than SC Freiburg, and that could matter in the second half.

The Betting Verdict

I would not be surprised if Wolfsburg make this uncomfortable. SC Freiburg have played three times in the past week, including a difficult trip to Monaco, and their defensive work has looked less secure under that workload.

Both teams to score is worth considering. Wolfsburg have been scoring regularly in the 2.Bundesliga, while SC Freiburg should create chances at home even if Schuster rotates.

I won't rule out a home win, but I expect the visitors to have chances of their own.
