Hull City v Ipswich Town
Football: English Premier League
Saturday 31st October 2026 - Kick Off 3pm

Hull City

Another battling display at the MKM Stadium has maintained Hull City's unbeaten run at home in the Premier League and earned another point in a campaign where the main ambition is survival. There are plenty of positives to take from the opening eight Premier League games played, but manager Sergej Jakirovic would like to see his team turn a few of the recent draws into wins.

The Tigers are 10th in the Premier League table and have picked up 10 points so far this season and the focus for those bidding to avoid the drop is getting to 40 points as soon as possible. The majority of the points earned have been from fixtures played at the MKM Stadium where Hull City have a 1-3-0 record in the top flight.

Hull City opened the season with consecutive Premier League wins, but they have not won any of the last 7 games in all competitions. Last Sunday, Hull City earned a 1-1 home draw with Brentford and that makes it 3 consecutive home Premier League draws since the 2-0 upset of Manchester United on the opening weekend of the season.

Nobel Mendy and Lucas Gourna-Douath are hoping to be involved this weekend.

Ipswich Town

Gary O'Neil would likely be the first to admit his team needed to ride their luck during the 1-1 home draw with Nottingham Forest, but Ipswich Town's supporters have to be largely pleased with what they have seen through the opening Premier League games. The character of the squad is not in question and fans will believe Ipswich Town have what it takes to avoid an immediate relegation back into the Championship.

Another point on the board moves Ipswich Town into 12th place in the Premier League table and they will also be happy with the 10 points earned so far this season. The Tractor Boys have a 1-0-3 away record in the Division where they have scored 7 goals and conceded 11.

Ipswich Town have won 1 of the last 5 games in all competitions, but avoiding defeat in the last outing will have boosted the confidence of the squad. They have lost consecutive away games at Everton and Manchester City since Ipswich Town beat Crystal Palace 2-3 at Selhurst Park last month.

Sasa Lukic is hoping to travel with the squad and offer Gary O'Neil a full complement of players to choose from.

Head to Head

These two teams were promoted together last season and it was Ipswich Town who beat Hull City in both Championship fixtures played.

Hull City have won 1 of the last 5 home games against Ipswich Town and none of the last 3 having suffered a couple of defeats in that time.

Prediction

After both of these clubs were promoted from the Championship at the end of last season, both are going to be pretty happy with the returns that they have made in the top flight.

Hull City and Ipswich Town have both secured 10 points with the former doing that behind a number of draws and the latter by putting three wins on the board.

Sergej Jakirovic's men have been hard to beat after securing another home draw last weekend, this time against Brentford, but there is still some work to do to find the balance between attack and defence. Much like last season, Hull City have found a way to escape some of the quality attacking positions they have given up, but the manager may want a bit more from his team.

The supporters will certainly expect Hull City to get on the front foot against Ipswich Town with the three points on offer meaning so much to both just days before the next international break is set to begin.

However, Hull City have to respect the way in which Gary O'Neil's Ipswich Town have approached fixtures in the Premier League and the amount of goals that The Tractor Boys have been scoring. This is most evident away from home as Ipswich Town have scored at least twice in 3 of the 4 Premier League games played on their travels, and the attacking numbers produced have to be respected.

Gary O'Neil's team have not been able to turn those goals into consistent points because they have simply not defended as well as would be hoped and that has to change if Ipswich Town are going to avoid the drop. Asking any team to score two or three goals to have a chance of winning games is difficult, but asking one moving up a level from the previous campaign seems too much and O'Neil will be aware of that.

Last season both fixtures between these teams finished in tight Ipswich Town wins, although Kieran McKenna was in charge in those fixtures.

Recent games played by Ipswich Town suggests this could be a high scoring encounter in what should be serene conditions for late October in Yorkshire.

The layers think the same, but this game may develop a little differently as both managers and teams will know the importance of these fixtures come the end of the season. It may mean a more cautious approach, especially from Ipswich Town, and so backing fewer than three goals to be shared out is the approach to take.

There is also a case to be made for backing fewer than 8.5 shots on target during the match with Hull City having managed just two across the last couple of Premier League games and Ipswich Town totalling six. That market is priced up slightly shorter than the under 2.5 goals market, but is worth looking into if you do not trust the away team's opening away defensive performances.
