Liverpool
A Penalty Shoot Out win over Chelsea means Andoni Iraola has kept all avenues open towards silverware in his first season managing Liverpool and recent results have given the squad some momentum. This Sunday is a significant test for Liverpool to see where they stand when they host the Champions and the supporters are going to be firmly behind a squad that looks to be settling under the new manager.
The Reds have quietly moved up into 4th place in the Premier League table and they are only 6 points behind the leading pair of Manchester City and Arsenal and with a chance to close on the latter. It will mean improving the 1-2-1 record at Anfield in the Premier League where Liverpool have scored 4 goals and conceded 5.
Liverpool may have been beaten 0-3 by Manchester City after returning from the international break, but they are unbeaten in 5 in all competitions since then and had won 4 in a row in normal time before the Penalty Shoot Out victory in the League Cup. They have won 3 of the last 5 home games in all competitions and Liverpool won for the first time under Andoni Iraola at Anfield in the Premier League last weekend.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Victor Munoz are hoping to be available for selection, while the likes of Milos Kerkez, Bradley Barcola and Alexander Isak will be expecting to be restored to the starting lineup.
Arsenal
Max Dowman's petulance was a talking point on Tuesday evening, as was Mikel Arteta's reaction to the teenager being sent off, but the sporting headlines were all about Arsenal losing at Highbury in the League Cup Fourth Round... That is not Highbury where Arsenal played for so long, but Highbury of Fleetwood Town as the League Two team upset the Champions on Penalties.
There is no doubt that the League Cup would have been fourth in the list of priorities for the manager, but the disappointment is that a pretty strong Arsenal team failed to find the solutions against a team struggling in the bottom third of the fourth tier. Mikel Arteta's team did move back alongside Manchester City at the top of the Premier League standings last weekend, and The Gunners travel to Merseyside with a 3-0-1 away record in the top flight.
Arsenal have won 1 of the last 3 games in all competitions, although the setbacks have been in Cup settings. In the Premier League, Arsenal have won all 3 games played since the 3-0 thumping at the Amex Stadium just before the last international break. However, it also should be noted that Arsenal have won 1 of the last 4 away games in all competitions.
An appeal has been lodged against Max Dowman's suspension, but, at the time of writing, he is expected to be absent for the first of three domestic games. Bukayo Saka is hoping to be back later this month, as is William Saliba, but both are expected to be absent. Fitness tests are needed on Riccardo Calafiori, Declan Rice, Noni Madueke and Christos Tzolis.
Head to Head
Liverpool were the defending Champions last season and took four points from Arsenal, who eventually took over in that position.
Liverpool are unbeaten in 16 home games in all competitions against Arsenal, but 3 in a row at Anfield had ended in draws before a late Dominik Szoboszlai free kick in the 1-0 win here in August 2025.
Prediction
At the beginning of the week, the layers had priced up the under 2.5 goal option at odds against in the biggest Premier League fixture of the weekend.
It is a price that has been shortening, but there is still some value in looking for Liverpool and Arsenal to play out a competitive fixture where chances are perhaps limited at both ends.
The two Premier League games played last season saw a single goal scored and that was down to a stunning free kick scored by Dominik Szoboszlai, who may not be involved this weekend.
In general, this is a fixture that has provided goals, but Mikel Arteta's team are not in the best form and they are without a key attacker in Bukayo Saka and potentially Christos Tzolis again. This has meant goals have not been flowing in recent games and the manager is going to want his team to be compact and hard to beat first and foremost.
Liverpool will feel the onus is on them to get forward at Anfield, but they are still a work in progress under Andoni Iraola.
This is evident from the fact they have scored just 4 goals in 4 home Premier League games, although Liverpool have been better defensively than they have perhaps been given credit for.
After the struggle against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool have not given up a lot of chances in the next 3 home Premier League games and they had largely restricted Manchester City before Ryan Gravenberch was sent off.
Assuming Liverpool are not planning to be reduced to ten men again, they can make things difficult for Arsenal and this looks like being a fixture where a moment of magic could make all of the difference in the final outcome. That was the case when the teams met at Anfield in August 2025 and so backing fewer than three goals to be scored on Sunday afternoon is the approach to take.
If a winning side had to be selected, Liverpool certainly look capable of avoiding defeat with a narrow start on the Asian Handicap, but the goals market is where the focus will be.
