Newcastle United

The majority of fans are going to be giving Matthias Jaissle some time to get his feet under the table at St James' Park, but the murmurings of discontent are getting a little louder in the stands. In a season in which Newcastle United are not playing in any European competition, the League Cup Fourth Round defeat at Everton will not have gone down very well.

The win at Selhurst Park on Sunday has pushed Newcastle United up into 8th place in the Premier League table, but it has been an inconsistent start to the season. Improving the 1-2-1 record at St James' Park where The Magpies have scored and conceded 6 goals is the immediate task for the manager as Jaissle looks to get The Toon Army behind him.

Newcastle United did beat Crystal Palace in South London last Sunday, but they have lost 3 of the last 4 games in all competitions following the 3-1 defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium. They had begun the season unbeaten in 4 at home in all competitions, but Newcastle United suffered a 0-1 defeat to Aston Villa most recently on this ground.

Tino Livramento continues his recovery on the sidelines, while both Lewis Miley and Matias Fernandez-Pardo hoping to be passed fit on Monday.

Everton

Strong goalkeeping from Jordan Pickford and some clinical finishing in the final third combined to earn Everton a place in the League Cup Quarter Final where they will face Fleetwood Town. It might be over thirty years since Everton last won silverware, but this is a proud English club who have won many trophies in their history, although fans will remind you that The Toffees have never won the League Cup.

David Moyes will put that competition on the back-burner for a few weeks and the focus is to help Everton bounce back in the Premier League after a difficult October. Recent results have seen Everton slip down into 11th place in the Premier League table, while they have a 0-3-1 away record having scored 3 goals and conceded 5 in those matches.

Everton have not won any of the last 3 Premier League games and suffered consecutive 2-0 defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal, but the win over Newcastle United in the League Cup Fourth Round will have given the squad a lift. Before the loss at the Emirates Stadium last weekend, Everton had been unbeaten in 4 away games in all competitions, although the 3 Premier League games on their travels had all ended in draws.

Jarrad Branthwaite is hoping to be able to travel to the North East having missed the last two games in concussion protocol. The big news on Thursday was that Jack Grealish had been left out of the squad for disciplinary reasons and the manager was not very keen to speak about his availability for this fixture.

Head to Head

Everton have only lost 1 of the last 7 games against Newcastle United in all competitions and they have won 3 of the last 5 played.

It is a run that means Everton are also unbeaten in 3 visits to St James' Park and the 2-3 win in late February makes it consecutive victories at this ground.

Prediction

Just like Manchester City and Brighton, Everton and Newcastle United are meeting for the second time in a few days, although the difference here is that we will be seeing a switch in venue.

Everton won the League Cup tie on Thursday at Hill Dickinson Stadium, but travel to the North East to take on a Newcastle United team who will be keen on earning a measure of revenge.

Both managers know the importance of finding some consistency in the Premier League and they would love to guide their teams to a couple of wins before the November international break.

There are questions for both teams to answer, but there is also every chance that Everton and Newcastle United can pick up from where they left off in the League Cup tie. Both teams created quality chances in that fixture and they combined for 7 big chances and the momentum could be for more goals to be shared out on Monday Night Football.

Recent fixtures between the two teams had leaned towards lower scoring, competitive outings, especially at St James' Park, but a back and forth game ended 2-3 to Everton in March. That makes it consecutive wins here, while the last 3 games between Everton and Newcastle United have provided 14 goals with at least four goals in each of those fixtures.

It should be stated that the home/away games respectively of these two teams this season have leaned towards being lower scoring affairs, but some of the underlying data has suggested that has been down to poor finishing from Everton and Newcastle United.

Both have given up some quality chances and we saw on Thursday that those can be exploited by the teams that will be facing off in the Premier League to round out this game week.

If the chances that were created on Thursday are produced in this one, you have to lean to the over and backing goals on Monday night is the selection.
