Football: UEFA Champions League Match Day 4
Wednesday 4th November 2026 - Kick Off 5:45pm
This game is live on TV
AEK Athens
In a thirty-six team Group Stage format, there are going to be very differing levels of expectation and Greek Champions AEK Athens will see any progress into the Knock Out Rounds as a big success. They have had to win a Play Off Qualifying tie to merely earn a spot alongside some of the biggest clubs in European Football and the reward is that AEK Athens will get to play against some of those clubs.
They are 29th in the Champions League standings, but AEK Athens have earned 3 points from a home win over LASK and losing against Shakhtar Donetsk and Manchester City should not have affected the confidence. Hosting Real Madrid will mean a lot of excitement heading into Match Day 4 and AEK Athens can take some confidence from the fact they have lost 1 of the last 12 home European ties played, albeit mainly outside of the Champions League.
AEK Athens will be more concerned with the fact they have lost 4 of the last 5 games in all competitions, which has also meant falling 7 points behind early pacesetters Panathinaikos in the Greek top flight. They were beaten at Panathinaikos this past weekend, but AEK Athens have won the last 7 home games in all competitions.
Joao Mario and Lazaros Rota are both hoping to be involved for the hosts.
Real Madrid
There has been a couple of setbacks on Jose Mourinho's return as manager of Real Madrid, but winning the Classico at the home of rivals Barcelona has given the squad a real boost in confidence and momentum. Avoiding having to play the Knock Out Play Off Round in the Champions League is the target for Real Madrid and they have made a strong start towards achieving that.
They will begin Match Day 4 of the Champions League as one of five teams that have a perfect record, although Real Madrid needed late goals at Roma to be in this position. Three goals in the final seven minutes helped Real Madrid win 3-4 in the Italian capital and they have also added home wins against Inter Milan and Leipzig to remain perfect.
Real Madrid were beaten at Atletico Madrid before the last international break, but have returned to win all 6 games played in all competitions. The side have won all 3 away games played since that loss to their city rivals and Real Madrid have scored at least twice in each of those wins.
Vinicius Jr has been serving a domestic ban, but is available, while Federico Valverde may be able to travel. Jose Mourinho is likely going to make some changes to the starting eleven to give players opportunities to impress.
Head to Head
AEK Athens and Real Madrid are meeting for the fifth time in a competitive fixture and the first time since being in the same Champions League Group back in the 2002/03 season.
Both games finished in draws that season and AEK Athens have won 1 and drawn 1 when hosting Real Madrid.
Prediction
Twenty-four years have passed since AEK Athens and Real Madrid last faced one another and the gap between the clubs feels bigger now than it did when they faced each other in the Group Stage of the competition in 2002.
It was a big gap then, but Real Madrid are amongst the favourites to win the Champions League, while AEK Athens are perhaps a surprise name to make it through to the League Phase of the competition in 2026.
AEK Athens have been strong at home, which deserves respect, but they will note that they have rarely hosted an opponent like Real Madrid in recent times.
The side have lost just 1 of the last 12 home UEFA fixtures played, but it should be noted that AEK Athens have been largely operating in the Conference League in that time. They have won a couple of Champions League games here this season, although those were against Levski Sofia and LASK and this is a much, much tougher test.
Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid have real momentum behind them and they will want to ride that into the November international break.
The Spanish giants have a perfect record in the Champions League and will be keen to move straight through to the Last 16 portion of the Knock Out Bracket once the League Phase is completed. Scoring goals has not been much of a problem for Real Madrid, which is not a big surprise when you think of the talent they possess, and the visiting team may have too much firepower for AEK Athens to handle.
Respect has to be given to the Greek Champions, but recent form will have dented the confidence even if the setbacks have been away from home.
Fans will make a very good atmosphere in which the players can thrive, but the Real Madrid qualities can shine through and they can win this game with some relative degree of comfort.
