Australia v Samoa
Rugby League : Australia : World Cup 2026
Sunday 8th November 2026 - KO 2005 AEST

Australia

Australia have won all three pool matches and have started to find their rhythm, beginning with a narrow but important 24-22 victory over New Zealand, followed by a tough 36-22 win against Fiji and a commanding 66-6 demolition of the Cook Islands. That last performance was particularly impressive, with the Kangaroos showing just how dangerous they can be when their attacking combinations click.

Reece Walsh has been outstanding and retains the fullback position ahead of James Tedesco, who has been named on the interchange. Walsh's speed, support play and ability to create opportunities from broken play make him one of Australia's most dangerous weapons. Cameron Munster provides the unpredictability in the halves, while Tom Dearden has brought composure and strong organisation.

The forward pack is loaded with experience and power. Captain Isaah Yeo, Patrick Carrigan, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui and Liam Martin provide the platform, while Harry Grant's speed around the ruck can put enormous pressure on tiring defenders. Cameron Murray also returns from a calf injury on the interchange, giving Kevin Walters another quality option.

Australia have the depth to trouble Samoa in every position, but they will need to be more clinical than they were against New Zealand. Samoa's physicality and attacking threats mean Australia cannot afford to give away cheap possession or allow the game to become an uncontrolled contest.

Samoa

Samoa have shown two very different sides to their game during the tournament. They opened with a remarkable 78-4 victory over France and followed that with a convincing 64-6 win against Papua New Guinea.

However, their 20-18 defeat to Tonga in their final pool match exposed some areas of concern, particularly their ability to maintain composure when the pressure is at its highest.

Jarome Luai is the key figure. His experience, creativity and ability to lift those around him make him central to Samoa's hopes. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is a genuine game-breaker at fullback, while Brian To'o, Stephen Crichton and Izack Tago provide an exceptionally dangerous outside-back combination.

The loss of five-eighth Chanel Harris-Tavita to a hamstring injury is a significant blow. Ronald Volkman comes into the starting side after performing well when he replaced Harris-Tavita against Tonga. His combination with Luai will be crucial if Samoa are to challenge Australia's defensive structure.

Up front, Junior Paulo, Francis Molo and Spencer Leniu bring plenty of aggression and size. If they can match Australia's forward pack and give Luai time to operate, Samoa have the attacking weapons to cause an upset. Their challenge is producing that performance for the full 80 minutes.

Odds

Australia are clear favourites, $1.40 to $3.50, the line 8.5 points and total points is 40.5

The Betting Verdict

Australia and Samoa meet in a blockbuster World Cup semi-final, with a place in the final up for grabs and plenty of history between these two nations. This is a rematch of the 2021 World Cup final, played in 2022, when Australia defeated Samoa 30–10 to claim the trophy.

Australia enter as defending champions and have been moderately impressive throughout the tournament, but Samoa possess enough individual brilliance and forward power to make this a genuine contest. The Samoans will be desperate to go one better than their previous World Cup campaign, while Australia are chasing another appearance in the final as they look to continue their remarkable international dominance.

Just like the other Semi-final one of the biggest battles will be Australia's forward pack against Samoa's powerful middle. Carrigan, Fa'asuamaleaui and Yeo will want to establish dominance early, but Paulo, Molo and Leniu are more than capable of matching them physically. Whichever side wins the battle for quick play-the-balls will give its halves a significant advantage.

The other major match-up is Cameron Munster v Jarome Luai. Both are instinctive attacking players who thrive when given space and time. Munster has the advantage of a more settled combination around him, but Luai is capable of producing something special when Samoa need inspiration.

Out wide, Reece Walsh and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow are two of the most exciting attacking players in the tournament. Both possess extraordinary acceleration and the ability to turn half-chances into tries. Their involvement could prove decisive.

Australia deserve to start favourites. They have been more consistent, possess greater depth across the park and have the huge advantage of playing on their home patch in Sydney. Their forward pack should provide the platform for Walsh, Munster and Grant to exploit Samoa's defensive weaknesses.

However, Samoa should not be underestimated. They have already demonstrated their attacking potential with 142 points in their first two matches. Their narrow defeat to Tonga was a reminder that they can struggle when forced into a tight, physical contest, but they have the individual quality to trouble Australia. I expect Samoa to start with plenty of intensity, but Australia's experience and ability to manage big occasions will eventually become the difference.

Australia -8.5 points is worth considering, although I think Australia have the attacking quality to more than cover it.

If the bookies are right and Australia to progress to the World Cup final with a convincing performance I suspect we will see a 13+ outcome here. Samoa do have enough quality to make the opening stages competitive, but I believe the Kangaroos superior depth, experience and forward strength will ultimately prove too much. My pick is Australia by 13+ points.
