Football: UEFA Champions League
28th November 2018 – Kickoff 20:55 [Moscow, Russia Time]
Introduction:
The situation in this group is pretty much clear even though mathemathically there could still be some changes. What is clear is that Lokomotiv and Galatasaray will not go to the last 16, or to be more precise the Russian champion lokomotiv has no chance to progress, while Galatasaray still has some chance. The Turkish side are four points behind Schalke and they need to win both remaining matches and for other results to go their way. Lokomotiv will want to beat Galatasaray and finish third in the group which will give them a chance to play in the Europa League at least.
Lokomotiv Moscow
They have not shown much in the Champions League this season and it is clear they will not progress further to the knockout stage and it will also be difficult for them to finish third to get to the Europa League. They will just want to complete the two more rounds in the group but if they hope to play in the Europa League they need to beat Galatasaray and then Schalke away from home, which is a tall order and furthermore they also need Galatasaray to lose their last match.
What they have shown so far is nothing spectacular. Against Schalke they were close to a draw but that did not happened and they only scored two goals in four matches played. Both goals were against Porto in the games that they lost easily and conceded seven goals.
In their domestic championships they are also not doing very well and are only fourth in the standings. They are behind leaders Zenit St Petersburg by nine points, which means they are not going to defend the title they won last season. After winning five matches in a row, they failed to win their last two matches and what must have hurt them most was the defeat at home to Ural when they were beaten 2-1.
As for the team news, they do not have major problems with absences ahead of this match.
Galatasaray
They are playing better then their opponent when it comes to the Champions League and although mathemathically they can hope to get to the last 16 but it is not very realistic they can achieve it. They are behind Schalke by four points in the group and it is not going to be likely for them to achieve the difference so their best hope is to play in the Europa League in the spring.
In their domestic Championships they are only in third spot, and they trail leaders Basakhsehir by at leats six points. They had a bad spell where they failed to win in three games, but they managed to end that when they beat Kayserispor 3-0 away from home. In their last match they only managed a draw with Konyaspor away from home. They were leading in that match but after Aziz was sent off with a red card, and then they conceded from the penalty spot for the match to finish 1-1.
As for the team news, they will miss the services of Belhanda, Akbaba and Gumus due to injuries.
