In the other match being played in Sunday’s instalment of the A-League, top of the table Perth Glory entertain third from bottom club Western Sydney Wanderers at their HBF Park as the hosts look to further extend their lead at the top of the division.
Despite losing 2-1 at home to Sydney FC just before Christmas, Perth Glory well and truly bounced back with three league wins on the trot against Central Coast Mariners, Brisbane Roar and most satisfying of all, their recent 3-1 victory over Sydney FC which avenged their earlier defeat.
Perth Glory have now opened up a useful six point lead at the top of the division ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures, and they’ll be eyeing off another three points here as they possess a pretty strong home record of 4-1-1 11/7 with the likes of midfielder Ikonomides (6 goals) and forwards Keogh (7 goals) and Chianese (3 goals) in their armoury.
Perth were held to a 1-1 draw by Western Sydney in their last encounter at the HBF but it was Perth’s opening home match of the season and a lot has happened since then.
Onto Western Sydney Wanderers, and although the visitors gave a good account of themselves against Wellington Phoenix as they twice levelled against the 6th placed New Zealand outfit, they were pipped at the post by an 89th minute winner by Wellington’s striker Krishna.
This midweek loss became Western Sydney’s fourth defeat in five matches as they’d previously succumbed to defeats against Sydney, Melbourne City, Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix with only a 2-2 draw at Adelaide United sparing them from five losses on the trot.
Western Sydney’s away record reads a below par 1-2-2 6/9 which includes just the one success at Wellington Phoenix in a 3-0 win but there’s been little for the Red & Black army to celebrate on their travels so far this season.
The visitors have kept just one clean sheet and have failed to score in 2 of their 5 away matches this term.
