Relegation has already been confirmed for Sangju Sangmu ahead of the 2020 season due to changes being made to the club and some thought it could lead to a lack of motivation in the squad. This is a team who have overachieved in recent years, but being a military one means there has been a high turnover of players and gelling a new squad together coupled with the confirmed relegation made it hard to see how this team can push themselves.
All of those fears look to have been put to bed with Sangju Sangmu winning back to back League games after losing to Ulsan on the opening weekend of the 2020 season. Those wins have moved the side up to 4th in the League table although most are expecting it to still be a challenge to maintain form through the course of the year.
Both League wins have also come at home and Sangju Sangmu are heading out for the first time since being crushed at Ulsan 4-0.
Even then Sangju Sangmu have to be respected having won 7 of their last 10 League games going back to last season. They had been unbeaten in 4 away games in the League, but Sangju Sangmu have lost at Incheon United and Ulsan in their last two out on their travels.
This week they head to Daegu who have made a relatively poor start to the season with just two points earned so far. That leaves the club in 9th place in the early League table and they are one of four clubs that have yet to taste victory this season.
Daegu finished in the Championship Round last season and they would have been expecting to challenge for a place in the Asian Champions League. Instead they have been struggling for form with only one goal scored so far in the League games played and Daegu are playing their second game at home having drawn 1-1 with Pohang Steelers in the first one.
The side have won just 1 of their last 8 games in the League and Daegu's 4 game unbeaten run ended with a 2-0 defeat at Champions Jeonbuk Motors this past weekend. Daegu have not won any of their last 6 home games in the League, although 4 of those have ended in draws.
The last 4 times these two clubs have met in Daegu have seen both teams win one apiece with the other 2 games ending in draws.
Prediction
The K League returns this weekend with a Friday evening kick off and both Daegu and Sangju Sangmu have surprised in different ways to open the 2020 season.
Where the hosts have underwhelmed the visitors have exceeded early expectations and that makes this fixture a little harder to call.
Goals have been an issue in Daegu matches and I think that may be the case here.
The under market has taken that into consideration with the prices, but I do think they are underestimating the chance of one or both teams failing to score. Backing that outcome would have been a winner in all 3 Sangju Sangmu games this season while also coming up trumps in 2 of the 3 Daegu games too.
That market would also have been a winner in the last two games hosted by Daegu against this opponent and that is where my money will go.
