Even though the fixture list has been far from kind to open the season for Busan I'Park, the players would have been excited about playing in the K League having come through the Play Offs in 2019. They have also shown enough in the first three weeks of the 2020 season to believe they can survive at this level, although we will learn a lot more about Busan I'Park as they enter a run of games which look much more manageable on paper.
The first of those comes this weekend when Busan I'Park host Suwon Bluewings who did earn their first win of the season last time out. However this is a drop down in levels for the home team who have taken a single point so far this season, but have faced the top two from last season as well as the Pohang Steelers who were ended 2019 in 4th place.
Last weekend Busan I'Park managed to hold themselves together for long enough to earn the point at Ulsan just a week after conceding late in a 1-2 home defeat to the defending Champions Jeonbuk Motors. Those two performances have been encouraging, even if Busan I'Park have had to sacrifice some of the flair and attacking intent which made them the great entertainers in K League 2 on their way to promotion.
Busan I'Park have won 1 of their last 5 games in all competitions going back to last season. They have also won just 2 of their last 6 at home, while Busan I'Park have been beaten twice in that run too.
The side will be hosting Suwon Bluewings who had lost their opening two games of the League season with one of those coming against Ulsan when leading 2-0 before capitulating in a 2-3 loss. The win over Incheon United last weekend, Suwon Bluewings have been able to move up to 8th in the K League table, but the club might have still been hoping for a better start to the campaign.
The sole away game played saw Suwon Bluewings lose at Jeonbuk Motors, but like Busan I'Park they will feel the fixture list could have been kinder and thus would have seen them earn more points. However the win last week snapped a 5 game losing run in all competitions which would have sapped some of the confidence of the team that won the Cup and earned a spot in the Asian Champions League.
Suwon Bluewings have won just 1 of their last 10 away games in all competitions, but they have been beaten in 3 in a row on their travels.
The last three games between these clubs at Busan I'Park have all ended in draws, although the home team won a Penalty Shoot Out to upset Suwon Bluewings in the Cup a couple of years ago.
Prediction
Both Busan I'Park and Suwon Bluewings have played the top two clubs from last season in their first three games of 2020.
While the newly promoted team earned a point, Suwon Bluewings lost both to Ulsan and Jeonbuk Motors. However both clubs will have taken some positives from those results and performances which should encourage them in what will be seen as a winnable fixture.
I am surprised that Busan I'Park have been set as the home underdog in this one. My feeling was that they can play a more natural game against a Suwon Bluewings team which has not been the best traveller in recent months and that natural game should mean Busan I'Park are able to get forward and score goals.
Busan I'Park pushed Jeonbuk Motors all the way when hosting them earlier this month and I think they do a little better against Suwon Bluewings. I will back the home team on the Asian Handicap to earn a result knowing the stake will be returned in the event of a draw.
