Ecuador will be looking to protect a seven-game unbeaten run in the CONMEBOL section of the World Cup qualifiers as the hosts seek another positive result on home soil at the Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha against visitors Brazil.
With just four group matches remaining of the South American qualifying section, Ecuador hold an eight-point cushion over 7th placed Venezuela ahead of this upcoming encounter against Brazil and indeed, Ecuador have emerged as the closest rivals to the group leaders, Argentina.
Eight points separates Argentina from 2nd placed Ecuador but nevertheless, Sebastian Beccacece’s side have collected important victories against the likes of Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and Venezuela since being dealt a 1-0 loss away from home at Brazil in early September of last year.
Six clean sheets within their last seven qualifiers should stand Ecuador in good stead, as well as a solid looking 13-match unbeaten run on home soil.
Brazil have produced a fairly underwhelming World Cup qualifying campaign by comparison to their upcoming hosts as Selecao have picked up six wins, three draws but have also been handed no fewer than five defeats as well within their 14 group matches played to date.
Interestingly, four of Brazil’s five defeats have been dealt out to Carlo Ancelotti’s new side and the Italian manager’s first priority will be to stem the flow of the losses on the road starting at the Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha.
Previous defeats on the road at Uruguay, Colombia, Paraguay and arch-rivals, Argentina, suggest Ancelotti and Brazil are expected to have their work cut out if they are to walk away with a point here, let alone the maximum three points.
The Betting Verdict
In the previous World Cup qualifier between Ecuador and Brazil in Ecuador, the hosts held Selecao to a 1-1 draw and another similar scoreline could unfold in this clash as well.
