Belgium
There is no reason to panic after playing just one World Cup Qualifier, but the late goal conceded in North Macedonia has put Belgium under a little bit of pressure. Despite having a number of Qualifiers still to play, it has to be remembered that only one team per Qualifying Group is guaranteed to take their place at the World Cup Finals next summer and Belgium would find a big gap between themselves and top spot if they are upset in front of the home fans.
As we move into Match Day 4 of the World Cup Qualifiers, Belgium are 4th in this section, albeit with games in hand over the likes of Wales and North Macedonia. Those two nations have major tournament experience from recent Finals so will be a threat, but Belgium have a chance to close the 6 point gap to leading team Wales by beating them.
Belgium did not enjoy a very good Nations League campaign following a very disappointing Second Round exit at Euro 2024 and that has led to a managerial change with Rudi Garcia taking over. His first game was a 3-1 defeat against Ukraine in a Nations League Relegation Play Off, but Belgium won the Second Leg 3-0 to retain League A status before the draw with North Macedonia last week.
Wales
A dominant display led to a comfortable Wales win on Friday night, as expected, but Craig Bellamy's thoughts may have turned to this World Cup Qualifier some time ago. The unbeaten manager of the national team feels Belgium are the biggest threat to Wales' ambitions of playing at the World Cup next summer and Bellamy has insisted his team will play this game on the front foot.
Three games into the World Cup Qualifiers, Wales at top of the section and have a 2 point lead over North Macedonia and 6 point gap to Belgium, although having played two more games than the top Seed in this section. The maximum points have been earned at home, but Wales needed a very late goal to secure a draw in the away Qualifier at North Macedonia.
Wales have pushed their unbeaten start to life under Craig Bellamy to 9 games in all competitions and they have won 5 of those matches, although not two in a row. Out of those 9 games unbeaten, Wales have played 4 away from home and the last 3 of those have all ended in draws following a 1-2 win in Montenegro.
Head to Head
Belgium and Wales met in the 2022/23 Nations League and it was the former who took four points from the matches.
The majority of those were earned from a 2-1 win at home and Belgium have won 2 in a row at home against Wales.
Prediction
The 'golden generation' is transitioning out as far as Belgium are concerned and this is a team hoping Rudi Garcia can rally them together.
The big home win over Ukraine in March will have given Belgium confidence and they can make up for the late goal conceded at the end of last week in the World Cup Qualifier played in North Macedonia.
They will have to respect Wales, who are 9 games unbeaten under Craig Bellamy. It is a run that includes two draws with Turkiye, who played so well at Euro 2024, and Craig Bellamy wants his team to express themselves on Match Day 4 with the feeling that the pressure is largely on the hosts who are playing catch up in this Qualifying Group.
Wales will give it a go, but that may suit Belgium too and they have beaten the likes of Israel and Ukraine at home over the last several months. Overall the form has not been that impressive, but Belgium do have the players who can make the difference for them in this big game and the expectation is that the hosts can win a game in which they need to score twice to secure the maximum points.
