Everyone who even has a vague interest in world events should know what is happening in the Middle East right now, but FIFA have always allowed Palestine to join the AFC World Cup Qualifiers and that is the case again ahead of the 2026 Finals. In recent years, the problems for the Palestine players to get in and out of home has meant a reliance on those who are already living elsewhere, and having to use neutral fields for home games has meant they have not really gotten very close to making the World Cup Finals under the old Qualification rules.
This time the AFC Confederation has been given more places in the World Cup Finals and Palestine have a chance to extend their run in the Qualifiers by winning this game. Anything less would mean elimination as Palestine try and move past Oman into the top four and earning the right to play in the Fourth Round of Qualifiers with two more World Cup places available to nations involved.
Palestine have drawn twice with South Korea in this Qualifying Group and they have responded to a defeat to Jordan by beating Iraq and Kuwait in back to back Qualifiers. The last two Qualifiers that Palestine have played as 'hosts' have both been in Amman in Jordan and they are unbeaten in those with a draw against South Korea followed by a win over Iraq.
Oman
The last World Cup Qualifying campaign saw Oman finish just a point behind Australia who then won a couple of Play Off ties to earn their place in Qatar. With extra places available to AFC nations in the 2026 Finals, Oman are under a bit of pressure to avoid an elimination in the Third Round.
There will have been a definite belief that Oman could earn one of the extra places afforded to AFC nations, but they will need at least a point on Tuesday to enter the draw for the Fourth Round of Qualifiers and the chance to earn one of two places in North America next summer. Up until a few days ago, Oman still had a chance to finish in the top two of this Group, but the heavy home loss to Jordan meant the latter secure one of the berths at the 2026 World Cup instead.
Oman's defeat to Jordan in Muscat has underlined the poorer home form during this World Cup Qualifying Group and that has left the team scrambling to even earn a top four place. The last away Qualifier played did end in Oman winning 0-1 in Kuwait and they do have the benefit of just needing to avoid a defeat to progress.
Head to Head
Oman beat Palestine 1-0 at home in November and they have won 4 of the previous 5 matches between the nations.
Prediction
You could argue that five of the six nations that will be competing in the next Round of AFC World Cup Qualifiers are known (Saudi Arabia need a five goal win to move past Australia and send the latter into the Fourth Round in their place).
Effectively we have almost gotten confirmation of six of the representatives of this Confederation at the next World Cup Finals and two more places will be decided later in the year when the Fourth Round Groups are played.
One place is remaining and it comes down to a straight contest between Palestine and Oman.
Palestine need to win this match being hosted in Jordan, while Oman just need a point and the tension could rack up the longer this fixture goes.
Credit has to be given to the Palestine team for finding a way to pick up enough points to still have a chance to finish in the top four, especially as they will not have hosted a single Qualifier. They have shown their capabilities in matches against South Korea and Palestine have a bit of momentum.
The same cannot be said for Oman who had a chance to Qualify for the World Cup Finals when hosting Jordan last time out- winning that one would have put Oman in control to finish 2nd in the section, but a 0-3 home defeat leaves them scrambling.
Goals have been hard to come by for both of these teams in this Group and it really does feel like the first goal is going to be crucial. An early goal could open things up, but the feeling is that this is going to be a tight, competitive fixture and backing at least one of the teams to fail to score looks the right approach.
