After a month’s mid-season break, the Brazilian top flight campaign resumes next weekend and features this upcoming lower half battle in Serie A between 17th placed hosts Internacional and 18th placed visitors Vitoria when the two sides prepare to do battle at the Estádio Beira-Rio on Saturday afternoon.
Internacional currently occupy one of the automatic relegation spots in the Serie A table but despite slipping to two defeats on the trot prior to the mid-season break which saw Roger Machado’s side suffer losses at the hands of Fluminense and Atletico MG, the hosts know they have a decent chance of redeeming themselves here on Saturday.
Saturday’s hosts had previously put together a solid looking five-game unbeaten sequence in all competitions which included picking up wins against Nacional and Bahia in the Copa Libertadores along with a Copa do Brasil victory over Maracana.
Internacional will no doubt be keen to further improve upon a home record which currently stands at 2-1-2 7/5 in the domestic Serie A.
Vitoria sit one league place above their upcoming hosts but are level on 11 points apiece with Internacional ahead of Saturday’s clash at the Estádio Beira-Rio and the visitors have now failed to win any of their last five games across all competitions.
Defeats at the hands of Bahia and Santos in Serie A were followed by a 1-0 loss away from home at Ecuador outfit Universidad Catolica in the Copa Sudamericana while subsequent 0-0 draws with Corinthians and Cruzeiro in Serie A will have done little to lift the current gloom in the Vitoria camp.
In addition, Vitoria have still not registered an away win in Serie A as they possess a poor looking away record of 0-3-3 4/8 to date.
