Atalanta Team News
This is a direct duel for European football next season, and it's Atalanta that's on the outside looking in. As a matter of fact, this is the moment they've been waiting for as their ascent from mid-table has been long and slow. They're at 53 points right now at #7 with no danger to go lower, 4 points behind Juventus, with Roma in between them at 54 points. Atalanta can achieve a lot with a win here.
There was a dark period for Atalanta that spanned six matches in all competitions, and it's likely the number of competitions that Atalanta participated in that caused the problem in the first place. After winning against Dortmund 4-1 and thereby overturning the first leg deficit and reaching the 1/8 finals of the Champions League, it all went downhill. Atalanta conceded 10 goals across two legs against Bayern, played 2-2 with Udinese and 1-1 with Inter. This was followed by two wins, against Verona and Lecce.
Atalanta is a good home side, very reliant on their stadium to get results. A notable one was the 3-0 win against Juventus in the cup two months ago, where it seemed so easy. Both teams were playing but Atalanta was the one scoring goals, with ease. It isn't the first time this season that Atalanta won at home against a good opponent. Here is the full list: Chelsea, Roma, Juventus, Napoli, Dortmund.
Juventus Team News
Juventus just decided to renew Luciano Spalletti's contract until 2028 following a period in which he stabilized the team and made them a contender again. He certainly deserves all the credit. Remove Spalletti, and this would again become a side that can't beat anyone.
More than anything, Juventus is a team that beats lesser sides and then fails to make an impact when they face a strong opponent. They have had a notable streak of five winless matches against Atalanta, Lazio, Inter, Galatasaray, Como and Roma. The latter is actually the first time this season that Juventus visited a top side and remained undefeated. It was 3-3, with Juventus having caught up from 3-1.
Long story short, Juventus still can't control a game of football when the opponent is good, and the best they can do is play ridiculously offensively and bring the totals to 5 or more.
Probable Lineups
Atalanta (3-4-2-1): Carnesecchi - Scalvini, Djimsiti, Kolasinac - Zappacosta, De Roon, Ederson, Bernasconi - De Ketelaere, Zalewski - Krstovic. Coach Palladino.
Juventus (4-3-3): Di Gregorio - Kalulu, Bremer, Kelly, Cambiaso - Koopmeiners, Locatelli, Thuram - Conceicao, David, Yildiz. Coach Spalletti.
The Betting Market
Juventus is, surprisingly, the favourite here. The price is 2.35. This means that you can make a nice profit if you bet on Atalanta at 3.26 or on Atalanta AH+0 for 2.20. Decent bets, especially the DNB option, as we've already established Juventus doesn't win derbies on the road.
Both Teams To Score: YES is priced at 1.61 and that's a decent banker right there. Over 2.5 Goals carries a higher price of 1.80.
The Betting Verdict
While we don't trust Atalanta too much, there's no denying that Bergamo is their fortress and that they're able to beat even stronger sides than themselves here. They did it to Juventus already, and they certainly have both the firepower and the confidence.
Juventus might win this and thereby get their first away derby win of the season. They're a good side under Spalletti and they can score goals whenever they want to. We wouldn't bet on them for 2.35 though, they're not supposed to be the favourite -- that role goes to Atalanta.
What we can be fairly certain of is that this will be a derby that has goals in it. Perhaps even four or five, which is a betting option that would be priced at 3.00 and 5.50 respectively. Three should be perfectly doable for 1.80.
The Pick :
Atalanta 2-1 Juventus
