A Sports Betting Pick by Stu

St George Dragons v Wests Tigers
Rugby League : Australia : NRL Season 2026
Saturday 4th July 2026 - KO 1730 AEST

St George Dragons

Interim coach Dean Young appears to have simplified the Dragons game plan, placing greater emphasis on winning the middle and playing direct through the forwards. Jack de Belin continues to lead by example, while Toby Couchman and Hamish Stewart have added energy to the middle rotation. The Dragons are expected to field a largely unchanged side, although powerful centre Moses Suli remains a chance of returning from a hip injury, which would provide a significant boost to their attack.

The Dragons biggest attacking threat remains fullback Tyrell Sloan. Few players possess his acceleration and ability to exploit broken defensive lines, and when Kyle Flanagan's kicking game is finding space, Sloan becomes incredibly dangerous sweeping around the back of shape. The challenge has been consistency. Too often this season the Dragons have matched opponents for long periods before errors and defensive lapses have undone their hard work.

Wests Tigers

The Tigers arrive needing a response after back-to-back losses have slowed what had been one of the club's most encouraging campaigns in recent years. Benji Marshall's side remains firmly in the finals race, but another defeat would place additional pressure on a squad that has spent much of the season proving it belongs among the competition's improved teams.

Jarome Luai continues to be the heartbeat of the Tigers, however he is out of this match with a minor injury. While Api Koroisau returns fresh after missing Origin selection and will be eager to stamp his authority around the ruck. Jahream Bula remains one of the NRL's most exciting young fullbacks, capable of producing match-winning moments whenever he injects himself into the attack.

There is also good news through the middle, with Alex Twal expected to return from a knee injury, while Samuela Fainu is edging closer to making his comeback after a lengthy layoff. Those inclusions will help offset the significant blow of losing Taylan May, whose season appears over after suffering another shoulder dislocation.

Odds

Wests are leading the betting, $2.40 to $1.60, the line is 4.5 points and combined points 48.5

The Betting Verdict

The St George Illawarra Dragons return to Jubilee Stadium for a fierce Sydney derby against the Wests Tigers in Round 18, desperate to halt a disappointing season that has seen them anchored to the bottom of the ladder. Despite their ladder position, the Dragons have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks and pushed several quality sides before falling away late. Home games at Kogarah have generally brought out their most competitive football, and they'll see this as a genuine opportunity to upset a Tigers side coming off consecutive defeats.

The Dragons have lost 14 of their 15 matches played in 2026, but they've competed far harder than their ladder position suggests. Playing at Jubilee Stadium gives them confidence, and rivalry games between these two clubs are rarely straightforward. Expect plenty of physicality through the opening exchanges as both forward packs attempt to establish dominance.

For the Tigers, the key will be discipline and patience. When Douehi and Koroisau control field position, Wests become a very difficult side to defend. Their ability to build pressure through repeat sets should eventually create opportunities for Bula and the outside backs.

These teams have met 47 times, St George leading the H2H 25-22. The Dragons had won 3 in a row over the Tigers before last seasons only meeting where the Tigers won 34-28 in magic round and this is the first meeting of 2 this season, they meet again in Round 24. At this venue the Dragons win 50% of their matches while the visitors are 2-5.

The Tigers appear to have more answers across the park. Their spine is more settled, their forward pack is deeper, and they have consistently performed better against sides outside the top eight. The return of Twal and Koroisau only strengthens a team that should enjoy an edge in possession and territory.

Rather than expecting a blowout, this feels like a contest where the Tigers gradually wear the Dragons down over the final 20 minutes. While the Tigers should be good enough to win, the -4.5 line carries some risk given the rivalry factor and the Dragons improved competitiveness at home and of course they could cause an upset. The safer investment is simply backing Wests to collect the two competition points.

Prediction: Wests Tigers by 8.
