Colombia
Although Portugal were the hot favourites to top Group K, it was actually Colombia who finished at the summit of the group by virtue of remaining unbeaten throughout the group stage and accumulating a seven-point haul.
Early back-to-back wins gained at the expense of Uzbekistan 3-1 and a long-awaited return to the World Cup finals, DR Congo, 1-0, handed Los Cafeteros the perfect start to their campaign while a point gained in a 0-0 stalemate with Portugal ensured Nestor Lorenzo’s side claimed the best berth into the round of 32.
Having been dealt just two defeats within their last 16 internationals across all competitions, Colombia will be a tough nut to crack on Friday night (local time) especially as the South Americans have kept three clean sheets in their last four games overall.
Ghana
As with the majority of the best eight third-placed nations, Ghana ensured their passage through to the knockout rounds with a four-point haul to finish in 3rd place in Group L following a 1-0 victory over Panama before sharing a point apiece with England in what could only be described as a drab and dour stalemate.
A 2-1 loss at the hands of Croatia in their final game of the group stage though suggests Ghana will need to produce more in the final third in this upcoming encounter against Colombia if they are to progress through to the quarter-finals.
Recent results overall have also been disappointing from the Black Stars’ perspective as Carlos Queiroz’s side have managed to register just the single win from their previous nine matches overall, whilst slipping to no fewer than six defeats in the process.
The Betting Verdict
Each of Ghana’s last six games have resulted in Under 4 goals being scored and Colombia look the better equipped to make in-roads into the final third than their African counterparts.
