Canada
Canada face arguably their biggest test so far in this edition of the World Cup finals as they prepare to line up against a strong and attacking Morocco outfit, but the co-hosts will also fancy their chances with a noisy and partisan crowd behind them at the NRG Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.
Canada ousted Bosnia-Herzegovina into the runners-up spot behind the winners of Group B, Switzerland, thanks to picking up four points from their three group matches including a a 1-1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina followed by an emphatic 6-0 thrashing of Qatar.
This resulted in Canada progressing through to the round of 32 where they continued their momentum on the wave of local support with a 1-0 victory over South Africa, prompting national coach Jesse Marsch to call his players national heroes.
However, this Saturday could spell the end of Les Rouges’ fairy-tale World Cup adventure.
Morocco
Group C panned out as anticipated with Morocco finishing runners-up behind the group winners Brazil but even so, the African nation finished level on points with the Selecao with only goal difference separating the top two nations in the group.
A 1-1 draw in the opening game of the group stage with Brazil proved to be the solid foundation which Morocco needed as The Atlas Lions went from strength to strength by recording subsequent back-to-back victories at the expense of Scotland and Haiti in 1-0 and 4-2 wins respectively.
A penalty shoot-out was needed against Netherlands in the round of 32 but nevertheless, Mohamed Ouahbi’s side still prevailed, underlining their resilience and desire to come out on top.
It’s now an amazing 33 matches without defeat for the Moroccans and they look set for further success against Canada here.
The Betting Verdict
Morocco have won the previous two meetings against Canada, the latter being a 2-1 win in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
