Football: Scottish League Cup Group Stage
Saturday 11th July 2026 - Kick Off 3pm
Preview
In three consecutive seasons, St Mirren finished 5th and 6th twice in the Scottish Premiership, but the 2025/26 season was a much more difficult one with the team slipping into 11th place. A 1-0 win in the Second Leg of the Relegation Play Off against Partick Thistle helped St Mirren to retain their place in the Scottish Premiership and Craig McLeish has been given the permanent role as manager.
The League record was very disappointing for a team that had begun the season hoping to challenge for a return to European Football.
However, the St Mirren Cup record was much more impressive with the team reaching the Semi Final of the Scottish Cup and winning the League Cup. The Buddies upset Celtic in the Final of the League Cup having begun the run in the Group Stage of the competition but this is a competition that does not have a European place attached to it like the League Cup in England does.
Still, picking up the trophy will give St Mirren plenty of motivation to get through the Group Stage again and have another strong run in the League Cup. They have reached the Quarter Final in three of the last four seasons and St Mirren have not been eliminated in the Group Stage since the summer of 2023.
St Mirren finished unbeaten in the last 4 games in all competitions at the conclusion of last season, but they did win just 1 of the last 4 away games played. This is, in general, a lower level of competition to be faced in the Group Stage with St Mirren down as one of the higher Seeds, but the side have only won half of the last 4 away games played in this Round.
They begin this season with a trip to Dumbarton who finished second from bottom in League Two last season and who may have been forced to win a Play Off to retain their Football League status if Edinburgh City had not been deducted 15 points. Financial problems have been hurting Dumbarton over the last couple of seasons, while it is no surprise to see that they have struggled to make a big impact in the Group Stage of the League Cup alongside much higher Ranked opponents.
Dumbarton have to be respected for the fact they have avoided defeat in half of the 4 home Group games played in this competition over the last couple of years. In a first game of a new season, St Mirren could need a bit of time to find their rhythm and showcase the difference in levels between the clubs.
These two clubs have faced one another in the Scottish League Cup Group Stage in 2018 and 2021 and both ended in big St Mirren wins with the most recent being played here.
The last 3 times Dumbarton have hosted St Mirren have all ended in away wins.
Prediction
After the struggles to avoid relegation last season, St Mirren will be looking for some positive results in the month leading up to the new Scottish Premiership season getting underway.
Craig McLeish showed enough as interim manager to be given the permanent role and St Mirren are the surprising trophy holders in the League Cup.
They have not always been at their most convincing away from home in the early stages of the League Cup, but St Mirren should have the edge over Dumbarton who finished second bottom of the League Two table last season.
Dumbarton can be stubborn, but there is a big gap between the teams and St Mirren can largely contain the home threat in a winning effort.
The Pick :
Dumbarton 0-2 St Mirren
