Elche made a solid if unspectacular start to the new La Liga season, taking a point from a 1-1 draw away to Deportivo La Coruna. They now return home for a considerably tougher assignment against the defending champions.
There are a few selection problems for the hosts, with Grady Diangana, Yago Santiago and Adam Boayar among those unavailable. That reduces some of Eder Sarabia's options, although Elche showed last season that they are capable of causing problems when playing at the Martinez Valero.
The problem is their record against Barcelona. Elche have repeatedly struggled to contain the Catalans and lost both league meetings 3-1 last season. They may find chances again at home, but keeping Barcelona's attack under control for 90 minutes is another matter.
Barcelona
Barcelona begin the defence of their La Liga title after their opening fixture was delayed due to their extended summer schedule. Hansi Flick therefore takes his side to Elche without competitive league action under their belts, although the quality available to him remains considerable.
There are some absences. Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji are ruled out, while summer signing Rodri is a major doubt after undergoing minor back surgery following the World Cup.
Even so, Barcelona should have far too much going forward. Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Anthony Gordon give Flick plenty of pace and creativity, and Barça's aggressive approach under the German usually creates enough chances to make goals markets interesting.
Their recent dominance of this fixture is difficult to ignore. Barcelona have won each of the last 11 meetings on record, with recent results including 3-1, 3-1, 4-0, 3-0 and 2-1 victories.
Betting Verdict
Barcelona should win this match, but there is little appeal in backing them at very short odds on their own.
Combining the away victory with goals looks much better. Barcelona's attacking superiority should become increasingly apparent as the match progresses, while their aggressive style makes a low-scoring 1-0 victory less likely.
Elche conceded three goals in each meeting with Barça last season, and a similar outcome would not be surprising here. Barcelona to Win & Over 3.5 Goals therefore looks the better way to approach the favourites.
