Tottenham Hotspur
Comfortable progress was made in the League Cup, but Tottenham Hotspur fans will have to admit the performance on Wednesday was a little underwhelming until the deadline was broken. Roberto De Zerbi's team did not look back after taking the lead against Charlton Athletic, but the manager will also know Tottenham Hotspur will need to be stronger all around if they are going to avoid another lowly finish in the Premier League.
The supporters will arrive in this part of North London expecting a big reaction to the 3-0 defeat at Brentford last Saturday when Tottenham Hotspur were well beaten in all aspects of the game. Over the coming months, the big challenge for the manager and the players will be getting more comfortable in their home Stadium after Spurs posted a really poor 3-6-10 record here last season.
Tottenham Hotspur's win in the League Cup means they have lost just 2 of the last 8 games in all competitions and they have won half of those fixtures. Perhaps most important in the short time Roberto De Zerbi has been in charge of Tottenham Hotspur is the 4 game unbeaten run the team have put together here, including consecutive wins either side of the summer break.
Savio will be hoping his change of name since moving from Manchester City may spark his Premier League career having scored and assisted from the bench against Charlton Athletic. His former team-mate, Omar Marmoush, is hoping to sign with Spurs and could possibly be involved this weekend too. Both Pape Sarr and James Maddison are doubts, while Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven should be ready to start.
Newcastle United
The Toon Army cannot say they have not been entertained in the first two games of the season, even if the results have not been perfect for Newcastle United. A late Penalty prevented them from beginning the season with a Premier League victory, but Newcastle United have won under Matthias Jaissle for the first time when overcoming West Brom in the League Cup Second Round.
This time a late goal helped Newcastle United past the Championship opponent as Harvey Barnes scored twice in a 3-2 victory, but the manager will know that there is still some work to do. The midfield has been broken apart in the summer transfer window and that has left Newcastle United vulnerable defensively, but the fans have to be excited about some of the attacking football produced.
Newcastle United have conceded twice in both home games played this season against Liverpool and West Brom, but won the latter after a 2-2 draw in the first Premier League game of the season. The next test for the new manager is getting his team to perform on their travels, especially as Newcastle United concluded last season without a win in 5 away games in all competitions and with 4 defeats in that run.
Dan Burn is the Club Captain, but is not expected to be available until after the September international break. Tino Livramento is hoping to be available to travel, as will new signing Nico Gonzalez, but Joelinton and William Osula are doubts.
Head to Head
Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup and took four points from them in the Premier League last season.
They won 1-2 at this Stadium and Newcastle United have won on 3 of their last 4 visits to Tottenham Hotspur.
Prediction
There were a couple of performances that will rival Tottenham Hotspur's at Brentford for the 'worst' of the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
That will not have made Roberto De Zerbi or the fans feel much better and they will open the League campaign at home looking to make amends. Tottenham Hotspur only won 3 of 19 home League games last season in what proved to be a really miserable campaign, but they are unbeaten in 4 here under De Zerbi and the win over Charlton Athletic on Wednesday in the League Cup will have been a confidence booster.
Roberto De Zerbi picked a strong team, but his starting lineup will be bolstered by the likes of Pedro Porro, Micky van de Ven and Richarlison coming back into the side.
Newcastle United fans will travel to North London hoping they have rested the vocals so they can prepare to boo another former player with Sandro Tonali expected to start for Spurs too.
It may not as intense as it was for Alexander Isak last week, but Newcastle United fans would love to see their team get one over on Tottenham Hotspur yet again in this part of North London.
Matthias Jaissle has built a reputation on attacking principles and The Toon Army will have enjoyed the football being produced in the final third. Newcastle United have already scored five goals in a couple of matches, but both were played at St James' Park and the defensive issues has to be a concern.
Nico Gonzalez has been signed from Manchester City to offer more protection from the midfield, but Tottenham Hotspur should have the edge in what is always a very important part of the field in any football match. The home team may also have more options to make a difference from the bench, while Spurs have been a bit more solid under Roberto De Zerbi and that may also help in giving them the narrow advantage.
Nothing will be easy against the pace Newcastle United will offer on the counter attack, but Tottenham Hotspur will feel they can do enough in the final third to earn the three points.
Both teams are likely going to have the opportunities to move the scoreboard and the last 11 Premier League games between these two clubs have all ended with at least three goals shared out.
Placing too much stock in what we saw on the opening weekend would be a mistake, but both defences could struggle to contain the other in this late Saturday kick off and goals should be the outcome.
