The Warriors have been outstanding over the past two months and enter this match with enormous confidence. Their recent victories include a 42-6 demolition of the Gold Coast, a 40-6 win over Brisbane and a super impressive 28-12 victory over Penrith. Last weekend they continued that run by overpowering South Sydney 45-26.
That form has transformed the Warriors from finals hopefuls into genuine premiership contenders and after the Roosters upset loss to the Tigers, the Warriors enter the penultimate round in first place.
Andrew Webster's side has developed a wonderful balance between power through the middle and attacking speed out wide. James Fisher-Harris and Mitchell Barnett give the Warriors enormous punch through the middle, while Wayde Egan provides excellent service from dummy-half. Kurt Capewell and Jacob Laban bring aggression and work rate on the edges.
The return of Te Maire Martin at halfback from injury is good timing. He comes into the starting side alongside Chanel Harris-Tavita, giving the Warriors a combination with experience and plenty of attacking instinct. The Warriors have also handed impressive youngster Luke Laulilii his NRL debut on the wing. His inclusion adds another young attacking weapon to a backline already containing Ali Leiataua and Alofiana Khan-Pereira.
Go Media Stadium has developed into one of the most intimidating venues in the competition. The Warriors have been ruthless in Auckland this season, and with a minor premiership potentially within reach, the atmosphere should be outstanding.
Newcastle Knights
Newcastles recent football has been inconsistent, but there have been some excellent attacking performances. Newcastle scored 36 against the Titans and 30 against Canterbury, demonstrating that they have enough strike power to trouble good defensive teams.
The return of Dane Gagai is a significant boost. The veteran centre has been named to return after missing the Manly match, while Francis Manuleleua also returns to strengthen the forward pack. Gagai's experience could be particularly valuable against a Warriors backline containing several younger players. His ability to read defensive structures and find space on the edges gives Newcastle a genuine attacking avenue.
Fullback and key Newcastle player, Ponga remains the Knights ultimate X-factor. His acceleration, footwork and ability to attack broken defensive lines can change a game in seconds. If Newcastle can win the middle and give him front-foot ball, he is capable of creating something from very little.
Giving up 44 points to Manly last weekend is concerning, particularly against a Warriors side that has scored 40-plus points in several recent matches. If the Knights allow the Warriors to build momentum, the afternoon could become very long.

The Betting Verdict
The New Zealand Warriors head into their final regular-season home game at Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday afternoon with the minor premiership firmly within reach when they host the Newcastle Knights. With the Warriors, Panthers and Roosters all sitting on 38 points and the Dolphins just two points behind, every result in the final two rounds carries enormous significance. The Warriors have been one of the competition's form teams through the second half of the season and now have the opportunity to put themselves in the box seat for a top-two finish.
Justin Holbrook's side has shown enough attacking quality in recent weeks to make this a potentially awkward afternoon for the Warriors. Newcastle have won three of their past five, including a 36-26 victory over the Titans, before last week's 44-24 defeat to Manly. They will be determined to finish the season with a statement performance against one of the competition's leading sides.
Overall H2H has the Warriors leading 28-1-23 and New Zealand have won the last three meetings, including a very comfortable victory earlier this season in Round 3, 12-38. Although the last match reached 50 points, the vast majority of recent matches between these clubs have barely hit 40 points.
The Warriors should win, they are playing at home, they are chasing the minor premiership, they have won four of their past five and their recent football has been outstanding. The 45-26 victory over South Sydney last weekend demonstrated that they can win both defensive arm wrestles and high-scoring shootouts.
For Newcastle, giving up 44 points to Manly last weekend is not the sort of defensive performance you want to take into Go Media Stadium against a Warriors side that is averaging enormous attacking numbers over the past month.
The combined points total is likely the best choice in this one. At 47.5, the market is expecting a reasonably open game. Given the Warriors, recent scoring explosion and Newcastle's defensive issues, there is certainly a case for the under. But I think the Warriors may ultimately control the tempo once they get in front.
I expect Newcastle to score, but I don't expect them to score enough to beat the Warriors and the combined points should stay under with a strong defensive display from the Warriors expected.
