Valencia arrive under real pressure after a dismal opening to the season. Carlos Corberan's side have managed just one point from their first three games and have found the net only twice, a return that has already invited scrutiny at Mestalla. Confidence is in short supply.
The timing could hardly be tougher. Barcelona are the last team any struggling side wants to see, and this is set to be the champions' final league visit to the old Mestalla before Valencia's long-awaited stadium move. Corberan is also juggling a number of attacking and midfield absences, which further limits his options against elite opposition.
If there is hope, it lies in a disciplined, deep block and the pace of Umar Sadiq on the counter. Valencia will need Pepelu and Ugrinic to win the midfield battle and keep the game compact. Realistically, though, containment rather than victory looks the ceiling here, and even that will take a near-perfect night.
Barcelona
Barcelona could scarcely be in better shape. Hansi Flick's champions have won all three of their opening fixtures and racked up twelve goals in the process, following a 5-0 rout of Elche and a 2-0 win over Athletic with a thrilling 5-2 success against Rayo Vallecano. The attack is purring.
Individual brilliance is everywhere. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha both struck twice against Rayo, while Fermin Lopez and Pedri keep the supply line humming. Against a Valencia side this fragile, Barca's forward line should find plenty of joy, all the more so given they thumped these same opponents 6-0 at home last season.
The one small chink is at the back. Barca kept clean sheets in their first two outings but were pegged back twice by Rayo, a hint that this team would rather outscore opponents than shut them out. That is unlikely to matter much here, but it does point towards an open, goal-friendly contest.
Betting Verdict
There is only one favourite, and the market knows it. Barcelona are priced around 1.40 to win and the head-to-head record is brutally one-sided, with Valencia beaten in the vast majority of recent meetings. Backing the win on its own offers next to no value at that price.
The goals angle is far more appealing. Barcelona have scored twelve in three games and cleared over 2.5 with ease, or even both teams scoring here, while each of the last three meetings between these sides passed the same mark. Even a toothless Valencia should not stop Barca from running up a comfortable, high-scoring win at Mestalla.
