Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino has stated that Tottenham Hotspur should have been awarded the Premier League title after Chelsea admitted breaking the rules, but this is unlikely to make fans feel that much better in 2026. Long gone are the days when Tottenham Hotspur legitimately challenged for the Premier League title and reached the Champions League Final and Roberto De Zerbi is desperately trying to find a way to help this squad turn things around.
A first Premier League point of the season earned with a battling draw at the City Ground will help, but the Italian will know that he has to help Tottenham Hotspur find a victory before the September international break. Two more League opportunities are coming up for Spurs, but they have been beaten in the first fixture played in the home Stadium and that continues really poor form in this part of North East London.
Tottenham Hotspur have beaten Charlton Athletic in the League Cup Second Round, but the early form in the Premier League means they have won 1 of the last 6 top flight fixtures played. Even the 3 game unbeaten run at home under this manager did not feel all that convincing and Tottenham Hotspur fans will note they have won 1 of the last 12 home Premier League games stretching back to early December 2025.
James Maddison is expected to be available, but Mykhailo Mudryk has suffered an injury that will keep him out of action for around six weeks.
Everton
A difficult summer transfer window is now behind Everton and David Moyes has to be impressed with the character his squad have shown to put an unbeaten start to the season on the board. This is a team that refuses to accept they are beaten and back to back Premier League draws have been earned thanks to equalisers deep into injury time.
Last weekend Everton scored with virtually the last kick of the ball to earn a 2-2 draw with Manchester United and it was ironic that it was one of the incomings in the summer window that provided the equaliser considering the disappointment the fans had with the transfer activity. They also scored in injury time at Bournemouth to open this Premier League away season with a point at the Vitality Stadium.
Everton not only failed to win any of the last 7 Premier League games to end last season, but they had lost 4 of those matches. This season has begun differently with the team unbeaten in 4 in all competitions and Everton had opened with consecutive wins before drawing 2 in a row. The Toffees have won at Preston North End in the League Cup, but they have not won any of 6 away Premier League games and lost 3 times.
Christian Norgaard is not expected to be available until clubs return from the September international break. James Garner is available having had cramping issues last Sunday.
Head to Head
Tottenham Hotspur did the Premier League double over Everton last season and those points were key in surviving in the top flight.
They beat Everton 1-0 here on the final day of the 2025/26 season to avoid a disastrous relegation.
Playing in the new home has not been much fun for Tottenham Hotspur unless they have played Everton and Spurs are going for a sixth straight home victory against this opponent.
Prediction
One or two signs have been seen that Tottenham Hotspur are going to improve as the weeks move forward, but there is also a real sense of frustration that the opening weeks of the season have not been much more positive than they have been.
A single Premier League point has been earned and Tottenham Hotspur have yet to score a goal, but Roberto De Zerbi will be pleased with a clean sheet last week at the City Ground.
This at least gives Tottenham Hotspur a platform from which to try and take off and they will also feel they were the better team when losing to Newcastle United here at the end of August.
It is a defeat that means Tottenham Hotspur have won 1 of the last 12 Premier League games at this ground, but that did occur against Everton.
Another injury time goal helped Everton maintain an unbeaten start to the new season, but David Moyes will be aware that his team need to stay healthy. There does feel like a real drop off in level if the first team are unavailable and that does put pressure on a relatively small squad.
Everton will battle, but they are one of the few teams who continue to find it tough to visit Tottenham Hotspur having lost 5 away games in a row against this opponent. They have yet to tighten up defensively, which is a concern for a manager like David Moyes, and Everton were lacking a bit of spark in the final third despite scoring twice in the draw with Manchester United.
This is a fixture where the first goal feels important, but Tottenham Hotspur may deserve the edge having shown a bit more resilience in the defensive shape in the last couple of matches.
Spurs are mentally vulnerable- you'd worry about them if they fell behind- but the underlying numbers suggest they are closer to a turnaround than some may think and it can begin with another home victory over Everton at odds against prices.
