Tottenham Hotspur

Losing in the League Cup has closed another avenue for success in the 2026/27 season, but right now Tottenham Hotspur fans are just hoping it is not another disrupted campaign. The pressure is on manager Roberto De Zerbi after a poor start to the Premier League season and the Cup exit at Anfield will be quickly forgotten if Tottenham Hotspur can find some consistency in the top flight.

Back to back 17th place finishes in the Premier League led to a considerable financial investment in the playing squad in the summer transfer window, but Tottenham Hotspur are still 17th in the very early standings in the 2026/27 season. They have earned 2 points, but Spurs have yet to score a goal and return home this weekend where they have a 0-1-1 record in the Division.

Tottenham Hotspur's sole win in 6 attempts in all competitions came against Championship Charlton Athletic, but the loss at Liverpool this past Tuesday means the side have been beaten in half of the fixtures completed this season. They have earned goalless draws in consecutive Premier League games against Nottingham Forest and Everton, but the draw last weekend has continued a really poor run of results for Tottenham Hotspur in front of the home supporters.

Pedro Porro, Destiny Udogie and Sandro Tonali are all doubts in the final game before the September international break.

Aston Villa

Unai Emery has plenty of goodwill in the bank and that will allow him to be given a bit of time to help Aston Villa back on track. The home loss to Nottingham Forest last weekend will have stung, but Aston Villa have made it through to the League Cup Fourth Round after winning at Coventry City during the week and will be looking to build on that result.

The huge amount of turnover in the playing squad was always going to impact Aston Villa and they have made a slow start to the Premier League season for a second year in a row. They will travel to North London in 19th place in the Premier League table and with a single point on the board, although Aston Villa earned that away from home at Hull City.

Aston Villa have not won a Premier League game yet, but they have beaten Club Brugge and Coventry City in Cup settings and both of those wins have been earned away from home. That means Aston Villa are unbeaten in 3 away games in all competitions since the first half capitulation at Brighton on the opening weekend of the season.

Joao Gomes has served a domestic suspension, but is doubtful with a calf issue, while the likes of Marco Bizot, Pau Torres, Leon Goretzka and Brian Madjo may not be fit enough to travel.

Head to Head

Both Premier League meetings were won by the same 1-2 scoreline by the away team last season, while Aston Villa also won by that scoreline here in the FA Cup.

Like so many who have played at this Stadium since it opened, Aston Villa have enjoyed visiting Tottenham Hotspur and have won 4 of the last 5 games against them in North London.

Prediction

Two clubs who will have expectations of challenging for Champions League spots next May have made very poor starts to the Premier League campaign and they meet in an important game ahead of the September international break.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been beaten in the League Cup Third Round to keep the pressure on manager Roberto De Zerbi and you do have to feel this is a very big game for an emotional man.

Another setback and a poor response from the crowd would mean the next three weeks are really challenging for the Italian and it would not really be a big surprise if some change is made at the top. Tottenham Hotspur have invested far too much money to be comfortable sitting in 17th place again and a defeat on Saturday would mean falling into the relegation places and seeing that for almost a month before they can move out of those positions.

The home form has been really sketchy for a long time, but Tottenham Hotspur can at least take some heart from the way they have been defending this season. They have allowed just seven 'big chances' in the last 5 games in all competitions, while the defensive numbers have improved dramatically since the heavy loss at Brentford to open this campaign.

A big problem has been that Spurs have not offered enough in the final third to take advantage of back to back clean sheets and this is something that Roberto De Zerbi is trying to resolve.

He may feel his team will have some chances against Aston Villa, who have not had a very good start defensively, but keeping out The Villans may be more of a test.

Aston Villa have been able to employ counter attacking football to very good effect in the last 3 away games in all competitions and Unai Emery's team have found a route to goal, despite the big changes they have made to the starting eleven.

This may be enough for Aston Villa to continue their recent fine form in this part of North London and a single goal may be enough to avoid defeat.

There is no doubt that Tottenham Hotspur look a short price to win on current form and the poor record against Aston Villa may be at the back of the mind of those on the pitch. They were beaten here twice by Aston Villa just last season and backing the away team to avoid a defeat in the early Saturday kick off is an appealing approach to take.
