Everton
They fought back from a goal behind to lead at Hull City last weekend, but David Moyes will be frustrated that his Everton team were not able to secure the three points. Some of the performances have been pretty decent in the early months of the 2026/27 season, but Everton's lack of a squad depth is holding them back in what could be a wide open campaign behind the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.
Getting back into European competition is the ambition laid out by the manager, but Everton's board have not backed Moyes and reports that the owners are looking to sell the club will not have impressed anyone associated with them. Concentrating on matters on the pitch is all that the players can do and Everton are 5th in the Premier League table with 10 points on the board, while The Toffees have a 2-1-0 record at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Everton are unbeaten in all 8 games played in all competitions this season and they had won 2 in a row before the 2-2 draw at Hull City last Sunday. The side ended last season without a win in 3 home games played, but Everton have begun this campaign with 3 wins from 4 games at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Vitalii Mykolenko returned from international duty with an injury and he missed the fixture last weekend and has to be considered a doubt.
Chelsea
A poor run of form just prior to the last international break will have given Xabi Alonso something to work on in his new role as manager of Chelsea. He would have been asking for a strong return to action and Chelsea scored twice in the first three minutes and ultimately cruised to a big win over Bournemouth last Saturday.
It is a result that has pushed Chelsea back up into 6th place in the Premier League table and with 10 points on the board and fans will be feeling much more confident again. The next challenge for Alonso and the squad is to find a bit more consistency away from Stamford Bridge having compiled a 1-0-2 record on their travels in the top flight.
Chelsea had beaten Leeds United in the League Cup Third Round, but had also entered the last international break having earned a single point from the previous 3 Premier League games played. The side have lost consecutive away League games at Arsenal and Brentford and Chelsea have scored just once in those matches.
Reece James and Jamie Gittens are both doubts for the visitors. The international break was an extended one last month and that allowed Chelsea to recover a number of players including Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro.
Head to Head
Both Premier League games were won by the home team last season.
Everton have lost 1 of the last 9 fixtures when hosting Chelsea and they have won 6 of those, including the 3-0 win at Hill Dickinson Stadium in March.
Prediction
The early Saturday kickoff in the Premier League sees Chelsea travelling to Merseyside as a pretty strong favourite to back up the 5-1 win over Bournemouth.
It was a game in which Chelsea came out firing and they moved into a really strong position after just three minutes.
The final 5-1 scoreline suggests it was a comfortable day in the office, but Chelsea were not looking overly convincing once they conceded at that was with a 3-1 lead at the time. The quality of the forward players meant taking the opportunities that did come their way, and that continues to make Chelsea dangerous, but there is still a lot of room for improvement and Xabi Alonso will be aware of that.
Chelsea have lost their last 2 away Premier League games and been outplayed in both at Arsenal and Brentford.
Some will state that Everton are not as good as those two teams, but David Moyes' team have begun the season in confident fashion and they have enough in the final third to give Chelsea another severe examination.
Everton were not able to hold onto a 1-2 lead at Hull City last weekend, but they remain unbeaten in 2026/27 and that will have given the players some real belief. David Moyes will want his team to offer a bit more resiliency defensively, but will also note that Everton had produced three clean sheets in a row before the draw in Yorkshire.
There has been a bit more control about Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium and it is very difficult to ignore the strong home record they have against Chelsea in recent years.
Any team that has a front line containing Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro are going to be dangerous and capable of making a mockery of any attempt to oppose them.
However, Chelsea are still a work in progress and Everton's squad is about as healthy as can be hoped, which should see the home team find a way to maintain the unbeaten run.
