Coventry City
For the second time this season, Coventry City conceded a late goal at home to lose a Premier League game 0-1 and the defeat to Fulham ended a positive run of form. Frank Lampard will have been working with his players throughout the week to try and motivate them to bounce back and this is an important game for Coventry City as they return to the CBS Arena.
The defeat in the last round of Premier League fixtures has pushed Coventry City back down into 19th place in the standings with 6 points secured this season. It also means The Sky Blues have a 1-0-3 home record where they have scored 4 goals and conceded 8 so far.
Coventry City had won consecutive Premier League games either side of the last international break, but they have now suffered back to back League defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham. The side have lost 4 of the 5 games played at the CBS Arena in all competitions this season and the worry for the manager is that Coventry City have failed to score in 3 of the 4 Premier League fixtures played and all have ended in defeat.
Josh Eccles has been ruled out until after the November international break, while Bobby Thomas suffered a knock last week and has to be considered a doubt.
Sunderland
Three goals in thirteen first half minutes put Sunderland in a commanding position in the League Cup Fourth Round, but they had to hold off a rally from Brentford in the 3-2 win to take their place in the Quarter Final of that competition. Regis Le Bris will be hoping the successful Cup outing will give his squad a boost as they bid to turn things around in the Premier League after a slow start to the campaign.
A run of losses was snapped last weekend, but Sunderland remain bottom of the Premier League table, although a win on Saturday is guaranteed to move them up at least one place. The Black Cats have a 0-1-3 away record in the Premier League where they have scored 5 goals and conceded 10.
Sunderland have only lost 1 of the last 5 games in all competitions, but the majority of the stronger results have been in Cup settings. Prior to the draw with Leeds United last Sunday, Sunderland had lost 4 straight Premier League games. Sunderland have only won 1 of the 6 away games played in all competitions this season and they have been beaten in half of those matches.
Kevin Danso is available after serving a suspension, while the likes of Nordi Mukiele, Thomas Meunier and Wilson Isidor are hoping to be available. The manager made some changes to the starting eleven on Wednesday to allow some of the key performers to have a bit of rest.
Head to Head
These two clubs played in the Championship together in the 2024/25 season and Coventry City fans will not have forgotten conceding in injury time in Extra Time to lose 3-2 on aggregate to Sunderland in the Play Off Semi Final.
Coventry City had been unbeaten in 13 home games against Sunderland and had won 8 of those before conceding late in the Play Off Semi Final First Leg and losing 1-2 here.
Prediction
Both teams failed to score at home last weekend, but Sunderland will have been happy enough to have snapped the run of 4 consecutive League defeats in the goalless draw with Leeds United.
It is a result that will have felt better than the Coventry City 0-1 home defeat to Fulham, which means Frank Lampard's team have failed to score in 3 of the 4 home Premier League games played this season.
This has to change if Coventry City are going to give themselves a chance to pick up enough points to avoid the drop, but Lampard is still working on the balance with his newly promoted team.
Coventry City did not give up a lot of chances last week in the loss, but they created little and that may be the way this Premier League fixture develops.
Regis Le Bris will be feeling more confident guiding a Sunderland team that just made it through to the League Cup Quarter Final, but he will be expecting so much more than what they produced in the last away Premier League game. The Black Cats were absolutely battered from pillar to post in the 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth and Sunderland have to be much better if they are going to start producing stronger results on a consistent basis.
Sunderland did score three goals at the Etihad Stadium and played really well there, but it is an exception to the majority of away performances produced this season.
There will be enough confidence within the squad to believe they will begin to turn things around, but Sunderland will be tested at the CBS Arena and this is going to be a difficult game for both teams.
The first goal feels like it is going to be all-important, but the main lean is that this could develop into a competitive contest with little given away by the two.
Backing fewer than three goals to be scored at the CBS Arena looks the way to go with the two teams facing each other this weekend and there is a real chance that one of these two fails to score on the day.
