English Premier News :: Premier League Outright Winner Market - Stats and Numbers

The Premier League is back this weekend, and one of the more interesting betting angles at the start of a new season is who punters are actually putting their money on.

According to bet365's latest trading figures, Arsenal are dominating the outright market, accounting for more than 40% of bets from both UK and global customers. That's a solid vote of confidence in Mikel Arteta's side, particularly with Arsenal available at a boosted 6/4. Manchester City are next at 7/2, although that price perhaps tells its own story with Pep Guardiola no longer in charge.

The more interesting number for me is Manchester United at 7/1. United have attracted nearly 12% of the bets, suggesting that punters are willing to believe Michael Carrick can build on last season's improvement, perhaps helped by the fact that United collected more points than any other side during the second half of last season.

Other plausible wagers are Chelsea who got about around 10% of bets at 8/1, while Liverpool have around 7% of the money at 5/1.

Then we get down to the "wasting money" end of the market. Spurs fans have put around 3% of the total on their side at 20/1 despite the fact that Tottenham have not won the league since 1961. Coventry have attracted just over 1% of global bets at a rather more optimistic 2000/1. Somebody has apparently had a get-rich-quick thought. I admire the optimism, if not the mathematics.

Of course, the percentage share of bets tells us what punters *think* rather than what will actually happen, and those are two very different things. Arsenal being backed by more than 40% of customers is certainly interesting, but it also means that a huge amount of betting money is already sitting on the obvious favourite. That's not necessarily where I would go looking for value.

For now, the bet365 figures give us a useful snapshot of where the money is going before a ball is kicked. Now we get to see whether the punters have got it right, or whether they've simply found some more imaginative ways to waste their money.
