Union Berlin achieved a much-needed victory last week after suffering three straight defeats. The 1-2 away win against Eintracht Frankfurt was unexpected, but it came at an excellent time to help them in the relegation battle.
Union Berlin is now 10 points above the drop zone, which gives them breathing space, but they are still a couple of wins short of locking their league status for next season. Considering there are nine games left and they have yet to face teams from the bottom half, I think they will achieve that easily.
Union Berlin collected more points at home (16) than away (11), but their recent home form was not good. They are winless in three home matches, drawing once and losing twice.
Union Berlin’s coach Steffen Baumgart has to serve his yellow card suspension against Bayern Munich, so he will not be at the bench.
Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich shocked everyone last weekend with their 2-3 defeat to Vfl Bochum. That was their first home defeat to Vfl Bochum since 1991! Good for them is that Bayer Leverkusen also lost, so the difference of eight points remains with nine games to go.
The Bavarians must make up for that defeat, and I expect them to push harder this weekend. They have beaten Union Berlin at HT/FT in five of their last seven duels, and I believe they will repeat the same.
We should also expect to see some goals in this game, as eight of Bayern Munich’s last nine Bundesliga matches ended with 3+ goals scored.
One doubt for Bayern Munich is Kingsley Coman, who was subbed with a minor injury in the midweek 0-2 win against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. Serge Gnabry or Leroy Sane are potential replacements, otherwise no significant changes are expected in Bayern Munich’s lineup.
The Betting Verdict
Bayern Munich has never lost a Bundesliga duel against Union Berlin, beating them eight times and drawing three of their 11 matches. They won quite comfortably, 3-0, in their first duel back in November.
After home humiliation last week against Vfl Bochum, Bayern Munich must go for a convincing win. Even though they are comfortably first in the Bundesliga, I expect them to come out motivated and achieve a routine win against the Berliners.
