French Ligue 1 side PSG will take on Italian Serie A outfit Inter Milan in this upcoming Champions League final at the Allianz Arena in Munich for the right to lift this prestigious and elite club European trophy on Saturday night.
This season’s competition saw a revamped version with a total of 36 clubs in one league table rather than the previous eight groups in former campaigns - the top eight clubs progressed through to the round of last 16, along with the eight winners of the play-offs between clubs finishing 9th to 24th in the table.
PSG produced a rather indifferent campaign in the league phase as the Paris club finished in 15th place in the table after winning four, drawing once but losing the other three games of their allotted eight league matches.
Luis Enriques’ side started brightly enough with a 1-0 home win against Girona but then slumped to an alarming four games without a win which consisted of three defeats and a draw; losses to Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich had seemingly landed damaging blows upon PSG’s hopes of achieving a top eight finish.
However, the French giants responded in positive fashion by winning their subsequent three league games on the trot courtesy of victories against Salzburg, Manchester City and Stuttgart, scoring a total of 11 goals in the process!
A 10-0 thrashing of fellow compatriots Brest in the play-off saw PSG progress to the knockout rounds where they accounted for Liverpool on penalties, Aston Villa 5-4 on aggregate and Arsenal 3-1 on aggregate respectively to take their spot in this upcoming finale.
Inter Milan by contrast produced a cool and efficient league campaign as the Italians finished in 4th place in the table after picking up six wins, a draw and being dealt just the single loss within their eight league games.
Inter Milan’s success in the league phase of this season’s competition was underpinned by a solid and miserly defensive unit which kept a total of seven clean sheets and their only loss came in the form of a 1-0 defeat away from home at Bayer Leverkusen.
Notable wins against Arsenal, RB Leipzig and Monaco enabled Simone Inzaghi’s side to qualify for the round of last 16 with very little fuss where they accounted for the likes of Feyenoord 4-1 on aggregate, Bayern Munich 4-3 on aggregate and then eventually hauled themselves over the line in an extraordinary 7-6 win on aggregate against Barcelona in extra-time.
The Betting Verdict
Curiously, PSG and Inter Milan have never met in a competitive match on the European stage and both clubs have legitimate claims on securing a victory in this season’s Champions League final.
However, the well-organised Inter Milan defence could prove to be the difference between the two sides in this upcoming encounter and they look a solid bet with the handicap here.
